About
A Slurp-Worthy Tradition in the Heart of Waikiki
Stepping into Chanpontei Total Honke offers a direct connection to Shiga Prefecture, Japan, where the signature Hikone-style chanpon was born. Unlike the creamy, heavy tonkotsu broths common in Oahu, this kitchen focuses on a dashi-based golden broth that feels remarkably clean yet punchy. The secret lies in the 'Ougon Dashi,' a clear, umami-rich stock made with a proprietary blend of carefully sourced ingredients, poured over a mountain of stir-fried vegetables and tender pork.
The Flavor Profile
The bowl is visually striking, often arriving topped with a generous portion of crisp cabbage, bean sprouts, and scallions that provide a sharp textural contrast to the springy noodles. It is a hearty, nourishing meal favored by those looking for a savory lunch that doesn't leave them feeling sluggish afterward. While the menu is streamlined, the quality of the vegetables and the consistency of the broth remain the primary draw for local residents and visitors wandering through the busy streets of Honolulu.
What to Expect
The interior carries a functional, no-frills Japanese dining hall aesthetic that prioritizes speed and efficiency. Expect a lively, rhythmic clatter of woks from the kitchen and the steady hum of patrons digging into their bowls. It is worth noting that the dining room can get quite tight during the peak lunch rush, and seating arrangements are optimized for quick turnover rather than lingering dinners. If you are craving a nutrient-dense, authentic noodle soup experience that deviates from the standard pork-fat-heavy ramen options, this spot is an essential stop for any noodle enthusiast in Hawaii.

Great place for a good negitoro bowl! Salmon bowl was also very fresh and good value. Would likely avoid the upgrades as they’re pretty pricey and the colour and size of the uni is not like the photo.

Got the Tokujo with extra topping set for lunch and it was amazing. Super fresh fish, really generous portions, and everything tasted so high quality. Service was also very friendly and fast. We only waited about 5–10 minutes around lunchtime, which was totally worth it. Definitely coming back!

SOOOO GOOD!! Everything was so fresh and clean:) the bowls were also amazing. I’m not a huge wasabi person but they have really good wasabi! We got the maguro lover + salmon bowl with roe + uni. Ambiance is really similar to any dining in Japan!

Absolutely incredible! I ordered the sushi bowl, and it was outstanding. The ingredients were incredibly fresh and tasted super authentic—every bite was a delight. On top of the amazing food, the service was attentive and welcoming, and the prices are very reasonable for the high quality you get. Highly recommend this spot if you're looking for an authentic meal! 5/5 stars.

The seafood bowl was really fresh, tasted exactly like how I had it in Japan. Interior is small and cozy, all counter seatings. We were luck the wait was not too long about 20 mins. Must try if you crave for authentic Japanese chirashi bowl! Tip: if you drive, park at Ala Moana center across the street

Excellent meal. We got the original negitoro don with crab add in as well as the nishiki kaisen don. The crab miso upgrade is worth trying. The crab adds sweetness to the miso broth. All the fish tasted really fresh and the negitoro is seasoned well. We liked the egg yolk shoyu add on as well, it adds some richness to the overall flavor profile.

I came to Totoya for dinner and had a smooth, satisfying experience from start to finish. We waited about 10 minutes before being seated, which felt perfectly reasonable given that this location has limited seating. The space is on the smaller side, so it’s worth keeping that in mind during busy hours—but turnover was efficient, and we were seated fairly quickly. We ordered their famous bowl, and it truly lived up to its reputation. The ingredients tasted fresh, with bright, clean flavors that highlighted the quality of the fish. The texture was firm and well-prepared, and the rice was nicely seasoned—lightly vinegared and balanced without overpowering the toppings. Presentation was simple but appealing, allowing the natural colors and freshness of the ingredients to stand out. Portion size was satisfying without being overwhelming, and considering the quality, the price felt very reasonable. In terms of value, it struck a great balance between freshness, quantity, and cost. The service was good and impressively fast. Staff were attentive and professional, making sure everything moved along smoothly without making us feel rushed. It was efficient, friendly, and hassle-free—exactly what you hope for in a casual dinner spot. As for the ambiance, the atmosphere was cozy and intimate. The smaller dining area creates a comfortable, welcoming environment that feels relaxed rather than crowded. It’s not a flashy space, but it’s clean, comfortable, and perfect for an easygoing meal. Overall, Totoya delivers where it counts: fresh food, fair pricing, efficient service, and a cozy setting. It’s a straightforward, enjoyable dining experience—and one I would definitely return to.

There was a line to go in, but don’t be discouraged. It went by very quickly. It’s definitely worth the wait! Food is fresh and amazing here. Can’t go wrong with any of the bowls. Workers were also friendly and courtesy. Definitely will be going here regularly!

Totoya is a very small and popular restaurant specializing in Japanese kaisendon. The service is very friendly and the food is delicious and fresh. The main downside is that they are quite popular and space is extremely limited so it can be a pretty long wait to get a table. No reservations or signup sheet, you just have to stand in line. Otherwise a great experience. Atmosphere: 2/5 Service: 5/5 Food: 4/5 Value: 4/5 Total: 3.75/5
