Cafe Maharani
About
A Spiced Escape in the Heart of Honolulu
Stepping into Cafe Maharani feels like finding a quiet, aromatic corner of Northern India tucked away in the bustling Moiliili neighborhood. The air is thick with the scent of toasted cumin, fresh cilantro, and the deep, buttery sweetness of simmering tomato sauces. It is a no-frills, casual space where the focus stays strictly on the plate rather than polished decor.
The Flavors of North India
The kitchen excels in classic comfort dishes. Their Butter Chicken is a perennial favorite, characterized by a velvety, mildly spiced sauce that pairs perfectly with freshly charred, bubbling garlic naan pulled straight from the tandoor oven. The Saag Paneer offers a distinct, earthy contrast with its rich spinach base and cubes of firm, house-made cheese. For those who enjoy a bit of heat, the Vindaloo packs a sharp, vinegar-laced punch that cuts through the richness of the meal.
What to Expect
This is a destination for diners who prioritize authentic, home-style cooking over high-end aesthetics. The service is straightforward and efficient, often moving at a pace that matches the relaxed island lifestyle of Honolulu. One thing to keep in mind: parking in the immediate vicinity can be a challenge during peak dinner hours, so arriving a few minutes early or opting for street parking nearby is a wise move.
Whether you are a long-time fan of Indian cuisine or looking for a hearty, flavorful dinner that feels homemade, this local spot provides a consistent experience. It’s an ideal setting for a low-key weeknight meal where the warmth of the spices takes center stage.

Probably the worst restaurant I’ve been in a while. The food was borderline inedible. We ordered the vegetarian platter, which came with overly dry, over-fried pakoras and three curries that were overly sweet and lacked depth of spice. Having tried Indian cuisine in India, UK, Singapore, and elsewhere, I have to say this is the worst rendition I’ve ever tasted. The service was just as underwhelming—our entrées took over an hour to arrive, the water cups and chairs weren’t clean, and we had to repeatedly ask for water refills. The only positives were the generous portions and the nice interior décor, but the overall dining experience was unpleasant.

I would say the atmosphere isn’t the best I thought it would be bigger but no it’s actually pretty small then the pictures and expect to wait bc you have to go in and write your name in. For parking it’s bit hard to find but park far so you can just walk.

10 out of 10. Food was Excellent. We've probably drove past here 100 times but recently was told about this place. Food was delicious. They open up at 5pm. Get there early bc the place will fill up. We had Lamb Saag and my friend had one of chicken dishes. Both meats were fork tender and very tasty. The spice was just right. We shared the rice bc the items are served Ala carte. The huge Garluc Naan was only $11.99 and plenty of leftovers. Highly recommend- it was a good change of pace. Bella was our waitress but be patient bc they are busy. Bring your own beverages if you want something more than water or sodas. They will allow you to bring your own wine.

This place is delicious and amazing and casual and yet it makes you feel like you’re going out somewhere nice, too. Enthusiastic, full-colour-spectrum décor envelopes you in an upbeat yet relaxing environment that enjoys and is proud of its unpretentiousness. Not every item on the menu is available every night. This is a good thing. A rare BYOB Gem. We loved the, with its large portion of marinated chicken kebab on a plate over a bit of freshly sliced white onion, and accompanied by a small serving of cucumber and red onion in a mild green cilantro sauce and a rich raita it’s not spicy, per se, though it does have some who does leave their mouth awake. In a good way. It also comes with two small smaller none breads, which are warm and puffy and amazingly tender yet chewy. We also got another order of full size naan. freshly made and about the size of a pizza, an order of raita with its lovely yoghurt-based sauce, and a palak paneer. The vibrant green of the spinach in the cream-based palak paneer contrasted well with the cubes of mild and too some cheese. On the vegetarian menu, there are a number of dishes that are vegan. Ask the server. He knows everything. Service is correct and very knowledgeable and helpful. This small restaurant gets really busy, as it should. Expect to wait, particularly at the weekend. Totally worth it.

If you are from India & are looking for Indian food DO NOT GO HERE!!! They made a joke of indian cuisine! This one red gravy with practically nothing but cream & red colour in it for serves as ‘tikka masala’ & this huge, filled with oil half cooked paratha of all purpose flour was served as laccha de paratha. Run down & dirty.. will not recommend

The two food I enjoyed was Rose lassi and samosa Chat The malai kofta was stringy with American like cheese and just gooey. I couldn’t find any of the raisins that were supposed to be in it. The rice was like mush. Grainy mush. The butter paratha was just regular plain naan. Very disappointing. I finally just packed everything up and left. (Bread didn’t arrive till after I was waiting for my check. The service was not the greatest. But the girl who took my order was very sweet and clearly was doing her best. It’s not her fault the food was very bad.

This is one of the first Indian restaurant that we tried on the island and it did not disappoint. We loved all the dishes we got. Also the portion was very generous.

We had a fantastic experience at this Indian restaurant! The food was absolutely delicious from start to finish. The rose lassi was refreshing and perfectly balanced, and both the aloo dal and baingan korma were rich, flavorful, and comforting. The samosas were crisp and paired beautifully with a variety of chutneys, each adding its own unique taste. The real showstopper was the cheese naan—soft, cheesy, and simply irresistible. Portion sizes are very generous—we couldn’t finish everything, so make sure to order accordingly. Highly recommended for anyone craving authentic and satisfying Indian food!

Wow, I can’t believe this is my first time here. I am only through my first course (vegetable samosas with the perfect amount of spice, hot and crispy) and I had to write a review about how much I love this restaurant! Customer service was excellent too! The restaurant was full, every table was full at 8pm on Sunday (*you can’t really call ahead to reserve a table, you have to physically come and put your name down and wait for a table. I think we waited about 15-20 minutes). The mango lassi tasted like relax fresh Hayden mango. I’m so excited for our curry and to come here again. I think this is gonna become a weekly go-to for me!

I have been here several times over the years. They are pretty consistent. The mango lassi and lamb vindaloo are delicious. The tandoori mixed plate lamb was over cooked and hard to cut this evening. Overall a decent dining experience. They charge for certain takeout containers and a menu item didn't match my bill. They have parking in the back of the restaurant.
