A Morning Ritual in Honolulu

Stepping into this local breakfast staple near Market City Shopping Center, you are immediately met with the sizzle of griddles and the rich aroma of roasted coffee. Known widely for its commitment to fresh, locally sourced fruit, Cafe Kaila has built a reputation as the go-to spot for those who take their morning meal seriously. The space is bright and casual, filled with the steady hum of island residents planning their day over oversized plates.

The Signature Stack

The star of the show here is undoubtedly the buttermilk pancakes. These aren't your average diner flapjacks; they arrive stacked high, adorned with a vibrant, glistening mountain of caramelized apples, strawberries, blueberries, and bananas. Each bite balances the tang of fresh fruit with the pillowy sweetness of the batter. If you prefer savory, the omelets are massive, packed with fresh vegetables and local flavors that define the Kaimuki neighborhood dining scene.

What to Know Before You Go

Because of its immense popularity, you should be prepared for a wait, especially on weekend mornings when the line often wraps around the exterior walkway. It is a bustling, high-energy environment, so don't expect a quiet, meditative start to your day. The seating is efficient and functional, designed to get hungry locals fed quickly. Whether you are a visitor looking for the quintessential Hawaiian brunch or a longtime resident craving that specific fruit-topped pancake stack, this spot remains a foundational piece of the Honolulu breakfast landscape.

Cafe Kaila was one of our favorite breakfast spots in Oahu! From the moment we walked in, the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. You could immediately tell they work together as a team, creating a positive and upbeat atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. The service was attentive, helpful, and genuinely caring throughout our visit. One thing that stood out was the collection of colorful children’s artwork displayed on the walls. It was a wonderful reminder of how much the local community loves and supports this restaurant. The breakfast was absolutely amazing! Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. We were also grateful for the ample parking, which made visiting even more convenient. If you’re visiting Honolulu and looking for a delicious breakfast with outstanding service and a welcoming local vibe, Cafe Kaila is definitely a spot you won’t want to miss!

A nice little breakfast spot. It’s not too far from Waikiki so there are a lot of tourists and the lines can get long. We tried the cinnamon French toast, buttermilk pancakes (with fruit on top) and eggs Benedict (half meatloaf half pastrami). I have to say, the food is listed in order of what I thought was my favorite. The cinnamon french toast was by far the best of the three. We also had a side of friend rice but it was so garlicky we couldn’t finish it. It’s not the best breakfast in the world but it’s also not bad.

The food was delicious. Chicken was hot and crispy. The Banana Bread French Toast was a little light on flavor but still very good. I highly recommend eating here.

10/10. We were seated and served pretty quickly. The food came out shortly after ordering and it was delicious. The pricing is excellent compared to other restaurants. If you have a car, it’s definitely worth driving for breakfast with ample parking. We did go on a Tuesday, so it likely wasn’t as crowded as going on a weekend. Overall, would recommend!

Recently moved to Hawai‘i and live pretty close to this place. I kept driving by and always saw a huge line, so I finally had to it. Pretty good. I ordered the frittata, which is more like a giant pancake super filling and delicious. My boyfriend got two Benedicts, one with meatloaf and the other with pork, and both were equally amazing expect the egg yolk was fully cooked.

This was the best breakfast I have had in Hawaii to date…. The croissant French toast was loaded with fresh fruit so delicious and lovely. The fried rice was savory with the egg and ham accompanied by the jam and sourdough so delicious definitely would recommend this combination. The gap and cheese panini was also delicious…. The seating was my only criticism being a big girl and pushed up in the corner but thinking about the food is what I was in the building for… I plan on coming back.

Aloha, one of the best brunch spots on Oahu. The staff is amazing and the food is always changing. They make such great creative creations like cornbread waffles or meat loaf Benedict.. so so onolicious. And be prepared to wait in line on weekends. But it’s worth the wait.

Local spot with incredible breakfast, excellent service and super friendly staff. We didn’t wait, but expect long lines later in the day (arrived at 9am on a Monday) The coffee is delicious. Must order. Free refills. Special cornbread waffle with chicken is fantastic. Strawberry honey butter! Great crunch on chicken and crumb on the cornbread waffle. Eggs benny with Kalua pork super juicy and flavourful. Well-prepared potatoes as well. Pumpkin crunch French toast also delicious. Super friendly, helpful and attentative staff. 5/5

ICONIC breakfast spot 💎 omg, YES. Café Kaila is the breakfast/brunch spot that never misses. I built my own omelet with gluten-free bread. No crumbs remained. Their homemade salsa? Addicting. My friend always gets the spinach breakfast wrap and swears by it. Heads up that there’s usually a wait because it’s so popular, but the line moves quick and it’s 100% worth it.
