Butterfly Ice Cream
About
A Taste of Nostalgia in Kaimuki
Stepping into Butterfly Ice Cream feels like a retreat into a simpler era. Located in the heart of the Kaimuki district, this spot has built a loyal following among residents who crave handmade, small-batch scoops that avoid the mass-produced taste of supermarket brands. The interior is refreshingly modest, with a focus entirely on the rotating flavors that draw curious crowds to the counter.
Scoops with Personality
The menu highlights local ingredients, with the Ube and Haupia flavors standing out as consistent crowd-pleasers. The texture is consistently dense and creamy, a sign of their slow-churn process. If you visit on a warm Honolulu afternoon, be prepared to wait; the line often spills toward the sidewalk as locals queue up for their daily fix. The shop keeps things straightforward—you won't find gimmicky toppings here, just honest ice cream served in crispy, fresh-made waffle cones that fill the small storefront with a sweet, toasted scent.
The Kaimuki Pace
This is a place for the community, where the sound of metal scoops hitting stainless steel tubs acts as a steady rhythm against the background chatter of the neighborhood. While parking in this part of town can be a bit of a puzzle during peak weekend hours, the reward of a fresh scoop makes navigating the side streets worthwhile. It is an ideal stop for a casual dessert after dinner at one of the nearby noodle houses or a quick afternoon pick-me-up while exploring the shops along Waialae Avenue.

Good place for Korean dishes. This is comfort food at its finest. The spicy pork pot rice had a great flavor, and the soup and chawanmushi were simple but solid. The side dishes were good, and even better is that you can get free refills of them. Adding barley tea to the rice bowl after the meal wasn’t exactly a mind blowing experience, it was rather plain. But overall the meal was still good. The price is nice for the amount of food you get.

Wow, what an incredible place for Korean food and great value with the spicy pork rice pot. It comes with three unlimited sides. I love the kimchi here so much. There was also an unlimited soup, very delicious, plus steamed tofu. It was delicious — all that for $25. This is now my favorite Korean place, and I’m so happy I gave it a try. It’s on the second floor of SALT. The elevator is in the parking garage and goes to the second floor; from there you can walk across connecting bridges to the restaurant, or you can take the stairs, but I’m too lazy for the stairs. I loved my waitress — I didn’t catch her name, but she explained everything to me and I had a great meal. Fantastic service.

High quality food and everything was so tasty. Loved presentation of “sot” and all the fresh ingredients. We had spicy eggplant sot bop. Korean LA kalbi was very tasty and good quality. Side dishes like steamed egg, soup, Kimchee, oden, radish kimchee were all great. The waitress poured hot water on the hot stone and we enjoyed it.
