About
A Neighborhood Staple in Kalihi
Walking into Bread House in the heart of the Kalihi district feels like stepping into a morning ritual shared by generations of locals. This isn't your typical polished boutique bakery; it is a straightforward, no-frills shop where the cooling racks are constantly rotating with golden-brown, pillowy mounds of dough. The air inside is thick with the scent of yeast and caramelized sugar, a welcome sensory greeting for anyone navigating the bustling streets of Honolulu.
Signature Filipino Comforts
The menu leans heavily into traditional Filipino favorites. Their pan de sal is the main draw—served warm, the crust offers a subtle resistance before giving way to a soft, airy crumb that melts almost instantly. Regulars often pair these with the bakery's famous ensaymada, generously topped with a heap of shredded cheese and butter. If you arrive early enough, you might snag the hot pandesal straight from the ovens, which is essentially the gold standard for a quick island breakfast.
What to Expect
Keep in mind that this is a grab-and-go operation. Space is limited, and during the morning rush, the sidewalk can get a bit crowded with commuters waiting for their fix. It is the kind of spot where you might struggle to find parking if you’re driving a large truck, so consider a quick stop or double-parking for a split second if you can. The staff is efficient and rarely wastes words; they know the rhythm of the neighborhood. Whether you are looking for a quick snack to power through your day or a box of treats to share at the office, this Kalihi mainstay delivers consistent quality that keeps the local community returning day after day.

Q: How does the bread court his sweetheart? A: With lots of flours. Paul C. thoughtfully provided some great goodies from Bread House and they were delicious. I think he probably wanted me to space it out as breakfast for a few days but I couldn't help it. As soon as I saw the hot dog bun, I knew I had to have this savory treat. A hot dog with that unmistakable institutional taste is baked inside a soft, fluffy bread roll with cheese and scallions on top... what's not to love? I enjoyed every bite. A hot dog bun is my usual go-to to grab at any and all Asian pastry shops and finding one in the box Paul C. considerately bestowed was a treat. Come here and gift someone some baked goods. It will surely bring them a smile.

Stopped by and picked up a cream bun, a coconut cream bun, and some cookies for later. The cream bun and coconut cream bun were generously filled with cream and tasted fresh and delicious. The cookies were delicious and addictively crunchy. The chocolate chip cookies were full of nuts, chocolate, and toasted coconut while the small pecan sandies had a delicate toothsome hint of sweetness. The woman behind the counter was very kind and helpful! A lovely little bakery.
