A Taste of Northern India in Waikiki

Stepping into Bombay Palace, you are immediately greeted by the warm, aromatic scent of toasted cumin and simmering cardamom that hangs heavy in the air. Situated in the heart of Honolulu, this spot brings the rich culinary traditions of Northern India to the island’s vibrant dining scene. The interior maintains a classic, understated charm, favoring a quiet, traditional dining room layout that feels worlds away from the high-energy pulse of Waikiki beach traffic just blocks away.

Signature Spices and Culinary Staples

The menu leans heavily into Mughlai cuisine, known for its opulent and aromatic sauces. Their chicken makhani is a standout, featuring tender pieces of meat swathed in a tomato-based gravy that balances creamy richness with subtle heat. You will also find a variety of tandoori specialties that emerge from the clay oven with a distinct, smoky char. The garlic naan arrives at the table hot, with a pillowy interior that is ideal for scooping up the last bits of saag paneer.

Things to Know Before You Visit

While the service is attentive, the dining room can get quite lively when large groups gather, adding a communal, if occasionally boisterous, energy to the meal. It is an excellent choice for those seeking a break from the standard island fare in favor of something heartier and more spice-forward. Parking in this busy corridor of Honolulu can be a bit of a challenge, so planning a few extra minutes to find a spot is highly recommended. Whether you are looking for a satisfying lunch or a relaxing sit-down dinner after a day of sightseeing, Bombay Palace offers a consistent, authentic experience that highlights the depth of Indian spice profiles.

Gotta love people who find courage enough to live on remote lands and provide food for a particular taste We just came back from this place. Had an amazing lunch and interacted with owners, who shared their journey Food was amazing and much needed after 10 days of Hawaiian cuisine 😀 Definitely recommend them to all who seek some taste of South Asia in paradise - Oahu

Solid spot for some halal Indian food on the island. It's called namaste now not Bombay palace which is why ordering online could be a challenge. Tried a couple of curry items chicken quorma and chicken josh Rogan and liked them both. Decent prices

The staff were super friendly and helpful. The food portions were on the smaller size. If you go in hungry you will need to order more than one dish. I order the lamb Rogan Josh. It was good. I just wish it came with more rice. I ordered it super hot and it came back at a spice level 3/5. The staff gave me extra hot sauce to bring it up to my level of heat.

Updated Review: Came here for the second time and ordered the exact same items as our last visit 6 months ago. The quality, cleanliness and service all went down. We really enjoyed the samosas last time, but the samosas were obviously reheated this time around and the center of the samosas were completely cold. The sauces were also not as good as last time. Vegetable Biryani was much worse this time as well as it was a soggy mess, and it definitely didn't have "fresh vegetables " as the menu suggested. The carrots and peas tasted like it was from a frozen pack. The Lamb Rogan had less lamb and was also more oily than last time we ordered it. The chicken tikka masala tasted fine, but the texture was as if it was reheated as well. The only thing we enjoyed was the garlic naan bread. Hence two stars instead of one. Service got even worse, unbelievably they had even fewer and possibly newer staff as the server didn't even know if the entrees come with rice when we asked. Also no one took our order this time around and we had to write down our own orders, and go grab the check ourselves. And the same rule for not ordering any more food applies still. In addition, our glassware was dirty and we had to ask for it to be replaced. This concludes my very last visit to Bombay - will not be back again. Previous Review Dec 2021: Somewhere between 3.5 or 4 stars. We were nervous to try this place because of the overwhelming number of 1 star reviews on Yelp and Google, but decided to go anyways since the bad reviews were mostly about slow service - so we mentally prepared our selves for slow service. When you come you have to order before you sit down. So I suggest you look over the menu before you arrive. One annoying thing is that you cannot order more food once you sit down. We got Samosas, Vegetable Biryani, Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Rogan Josh and Garlic Naan to share. The food didn't take too long to come out because there was only one other table waiting for their food. The flavors of the each dish was really good, but the meats were a little tough/dry. As the restaurant got busy, it was really hard to get the attention of the staff to get our check, but as other reviewers said they are short staffed. So we didn't mind too much since we were not in a rush. But if I was in a rush, it would have probably affected my rating. Please note that there is a Service Charge of 18% automatically added to your bill regardless of your party size. So pay attention to your bill, otherwise, you might tip double. We usually always tip 20%, so this wasn't an issue for us, but it would be nice if the staff notified us of the charge beforehand. I might come back since this is the only Indian place that's close to me, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. If they fully staff and provide actual dine in experience (like order more food if you’d like) could be a solid 4 star place.

I went for a takeaway. They told me it will be out in 15 minutes and it was out in 15 minutes. Food was okay to get your curry fix. I had the Lamb Vindaloo, it was bland and weak of heath for a vindaloo, despite being assured it would be spicy. The garlic naan was delicious. Rice did not come included with the curry which makes the price deceiving. I guess maybe if you have leftover rice from another meal? My friend had the curry chicken and loved everything about it. Facilities were clean, workers polite.

LOVEEEED the food!! Don’t believe the bad reviews you see here and definitely give this place a shot. We went there and trust me when I say it’s worth every single penny we’ve spent. The price is also reasonable. They made fresh food as we ordered and it was delicious. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. I’d definitely go back to try something different and would also recommend this place to anybody who’s in the area. You won’t regret it.

Short walk from most hotels and food was great! We got there right in 6 and it was empty, but within 30 mins it started to fill up. The price and was good for the food. We ordered 2 garlic naan, lamb roganjosh, chicken coconut curry (this was divine! Creamy!) and rice each and 2 glasses of wine each. Total with tax and tip was $110. Food came quickly, service on the drinks was much slower. When we wanted the second glass I had to chase the waiter down. But otherwise the food was tasty! It was the perfect serving size too. Highly recommend!

The appetizers were great! We had samosa chaat and veg pakoras. However, the food was not. The “biryani” wasn’t biryani. More like butter chicken rice. But it was still good whatever it was. The lamb however was so hard we couldn’t chew it. They didn’t even have the curtsey to remove it from the check. When we told them it’s not chewable they said they can’t do anything. They know we are visitors so they don’t care what we think of the place. I’m so sad we came to eat our own food and this was the service😞.

I thought the food was really good! My chicken was tender, the saag had great flavor. The waiter was attentive and accommodated my special request. I would definitely go back. I did ask for the spice level to be the hottest, and I thought it was quite mild. Either I have a high tolerance, or they err on the side of caution.
