bb.q Chicken Kahala
About
Crispy Perfection in Kahala
When you walk into bb.q Chicken within the bustling Kahala area of Honolulu, the first thing that hits you is the unmistakable scent of double-fried batter and pungent garlic. This isn't your standard roadside wing joint; it is a high-energy hub where the focus is entirely on the texture of the crust and the depth of the glaze.
The Art of the Crunch
The kitchen here specializes in the Korean technique of frying chicken twice, resulting in a shell that stays remarkably shatter-crisp even after being tossed in sauce. Their signature Golden Olive Chicken uses high-quality oil that provides a clean finish, distinguishing it from the heavy, greasy feel of traditional American fried chicken. If you enjoy heat, the Secret Sauce flavor offers a balance of sweet and spicy that lingers without becoming overwhelming.
A Neighborhood Quick-Stop
Situated conveniently for those traversing the East Honolulu corridor, this spot is ideal for a fast-casual dinner or a takeout order before a beach sunset. The interior is modern and sparse, designed for efficiency rather than lingering, which makes sense given the popularity of their menu items like the Honey Garlic wings. Be aware that the space can get quite loud during peak dinner hours when the fryer is working overtime and the dining room fills with families grabbing a quick meal.
Local Tips for Your Visit
While the menu is vast, the wings are the undisputed star. Pro-tip: order a side of pickled radish to cut through the richness of the soy-garlic glazes. Parking in the surrounding commercial complex can be a bit of a dance during prime lunch hours, so arrive with a little patience. Whether you are a local resident or heading toward Hawaii Kai, this is a reliable destination for authentic Korean-style poultry in the heart of Honolulu.

I have tried a lot of Korean fried chicken places, and BBQ Chicken Kahala is still my number one. The chicken quality is truly outstanding. It is crispy, juicy, flavorful, and consistently cooked so well every time. That kind of quality is not easy to find. The boneless chicken in Secret Sauce is a must-try, but the real surprise is the Spicy Galbi Boneless. That is the hidden gem on the menu. It is unbelievably delicious and full of bold flavor while pleasantly spicy. Once you try it, you will understand why I keep coming back. Also, their french fries are a must-try menu. What really sets BBQ Chicken Kahala apart is that the food tastes premium and carefully made, not rushed or ordinary. In my view, this is the best Korean fried chicken I have had anywhere. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves great chicken (and fries).

There was plastic wrap in my Ddeok-Bokki which I unfortunately found while chewing it. The chicken however is still very good.

This restaurant genuinely made me open my eyes for korean food. I’m not a big fan of chicken but the Tteobokki with ramen at this place is mouth drooling. The workers there are usually high schoolers, they are pretty chill and the music they place is soothing❤️ They sell a big plates for a decent amount and I like sharing it with a friend☺️ Spicy 10/10 to stop by and eat no doubt.

6/1/2025. Still one of the best kbbq chicken plate lunches. Tasty wings but little pricy. Need to add whole chicken cut into finger food. 5/2023. This place hasn’t lost its touch. Always sooo tasty. I like to have white rice ready at home because it pairs well and you won’t eat too much chicken due to very addicting. Call in your order because they make it fresh and takes time.

Pleasantly surprised! We ordered the boneless Hot Spicy flavor, and it was really delicious. Light crispy breading, and a sauce that is actually spicy 👍 I was a little apprehensive reading some of the negative reviews, but am very happy I gave this place a try. Will be back!

I've ordered from this shop several times. Their shoyu Korean fried chicken is crispy on the outside and juicy / tender on the inside. On my recent visit, purchase the boneless chicken plate. For about $14, the shoyu chicken was flavorful, fries were good, but the star was the coleslaw. For me, it was a good balance of ingredients, flavors, and taste. A coworker mentioned it's one of the best Korean chicken spots from Korea available on the mainland. Ordering online for pickup is recommended—walk-in orders can take a while. Atmosphere and service are neutral—nothing particularly memorable either way.

First time and this place had me craving more of this awesome chicken! Give it a try and enjoy the crispiness and freshness. Every bite had a crunch that satifies your mouth and ears. I dined in and the atmosphere is very welcoming. They had K-Pop playing (music videos) and on another screen had K-Drama (Crash Landing on You). You can see the kitchen busy at work and seems to have mini meetings in between to ensure worker safety and camaraderie. Excellent place when you have the cravings! Give them a try!

Literally, the best Korean Fried Chicken AND Korean food you can get in the area! I absolutely love this place. The chicken is fantastic and delicious. I've tried their Chicken sandwich as well, and it was my favorite! Perfect spot to chill with friends after work on a weeknight! The staff is incredible and helpful.
