Banh Mi Street Cafe
About
A Slice of Hanoi in Kaka’ako
Stepping into Banh Mi Street Cafe offers a sharp departure from the typical Waikiki tourist traps. Tucked into the vibrant streets of Honolulu, this spot captures the frenetic, soulful energy of a Vietnamese sidewalk stall. The air inside is thick with the scent of toasted baguettes and the sharp, bright aroma of pickled daikon and cilantro. You’ll hear the rhythmic clinking of spoons against ceramic bowls and the hum of Kaka’ako commuters grabbing a quick, reliable lunch.
The Art of the Crust
The signature here is the crust—shattering at the first bite, revealing a soft, airy crumb that holds layers of pâté, savory roasted meats, and creamy mayo. While the menu leans heavily on their namesake banh mi, their vermicelli bowls are equally balanced, tossed with fresh herbs and finished with a house-made nuoc cham that strikes the perfect note of sweet and funky. It is an ideal stop for a solo lunch or a casual midweek dinner when you want something bold without the formality of white-tablecloth service.
Know Before You Go
Keep in mind that space is at a premium. During the peak lunch rush, you might find yourself waiting on a sidewalk bench or squeezing into a corner stool, but the trade-off is the genuine, no-frills execution of street food staples. It’s the kind of place where you come for the crunch of the bread and stay for the consistency. If you find yourself craving something authentic during a stroll through urban Honolulu, this cafe serves as a reliable anchor for islanders and visitors seeking a quick, flavor-packed escape.

They have the best vegetarian bahn mi here. They do something special to the tofu that makes it so tasty. I lost the picture. Pho was for the wife.

We just had their tofu bahn mi and it was exceptional. Very happy we decided to eat here. Casual spot, no frills, friendly, delicious, and quick.

Good sandwich selections. Chicken pho is great tasting. 2 blocks from the beach and worth the short walk.

Got the grilled pork banh mi sandwich. The meat was great lots of flavor however barely any on there. Some spread they use with a lemon grass flavor, very good. The veggies were so lacking it was funny. NOT like the other pictures on here. There was one tiny piece of cucumber. Hardly any cilantro or pickled veggie mix and no jalapeños like the other photos. We did take-out and I added more veggies at my house. My group referred to it as an expensive snack/appetizer for $15 each and no sides. We also got the fresh rolls, two for $10 and they didn’t even use a whole shrimp on them, it was cut in half really thin and long too.

We were looking for something different from the sit down restaurant food, and this place was a walk away in a different part of waikiki. I ordered a noodle bowl with pork and got a nice cold soda. This was all delicious, even the drink. We went when it was slowing down and it was quite and calm inside. It was a cute atmosphere. Definitely recommend 👌

The vermicelli bowl here is called "Grilled Pork Combination". I chose to upgrade mine with 2 extra spring rolls and some extra shrimp. It was totally worth it. The meat on top of the tender, warm noodles was crisp, you also get the crunch from the peanut topping . The spring rolls were toasty and tasted great in this combo. The crisp romaine and the fragrant mint played well with the freshly chopped cucumber. The sauce, oh the sauce! Well balanced, brought the whole thing together rather nicely. I had about a third left over. Good sized portion. I'm glad I found you on Google maps. Before I flew here, I went on maps and googled Banh Mi. This was by far the closest to where we stay. Turned out to be a great find !! Would come again, would recommend. Keep up the good work!
