A Neighborhood Staple in Manoa Valley

Stepping into Bangkok Chef along the lush corridors of Manoa Road feels like dropping into a friend’s kitchen. This Honolulu fixture has long been the go-to spot for residents seeking straightforward, no-frills Thai cooking without the fluff. The interior is humble and functional, centered around a quick-service counter that keeps the line moving, even during the lunch rush when the local crowd from the nearby university packs the room.

The Flavors of Central Thailand

The kitchen leans into the bold, punchy profiles of authentic Thai cuisine. Their green curry—rich with coconut milk and fresh Thai basil—and the signature Pad Thai are reliable staples that prioritize depth over flair. You will notice the scent of lemongrass and galangal the moment you walk through the door, a sharp contrast to the humid Manoa air outside. If you are a fan of heat, don't hesitate to ask for the spice levels to be bumped up; they don't shy away from using genuine bird's eye chilis.

What to Expect

This is not a place for a long, candlelit dinner. It is a grab-and-go sanctuary for those who value substance. Be prepared for a tight parking situation, which is a classic quirk of the older Manoa commercial buildings, but the speed of the service usually makes up for the brief hunt for a spot. Whether you are looking for a quick weeknight takeout or a satisfying meal after a hike in the surrounding valleys, this spot remains a reliable anchor for authentic Thai dining in Honolulu.

How can a Pad Thai dish be this tasteless? This was honestly the worst Pad Thai I have ever had. There was no flavor, no seasoning, and no real sauce taste—it felt like I was just eating plain noodles. We moved to Mānoa a few months ago and had always wanted to try this place because we love Thai food. We finally stopped by for lunch and ordered the Pad Thai, but it was extremely disappointing. Unfortunately, we will not be going back.

This review is long overdue. After all the years of me going to various Bangkok Chefs on Oahu the fact is simple. High quality delicious food for a reasonable price. It’s been hard to find good value meals these days, and as prices keep going up and portions get smaller, I find myself visiting Bangkok Chef for their consistent service, nice atmosphere and classic recipes.

Had not been there for a long time, like over 2 years as it is just too expensive to eat out these days. I can tell you the food is still excellent and reasonably priced. We had a variety of dishes. Only thing is yellow curry a little watery, and the papaya salad had vinegar instead of lime. But the other dishes were wonderful. My friend said the Thai tea was strong (better than too weak). Plan to return!

Bangkok Chef provides a great casual dining experience with a nice selection of menu items. I generally prefer this Manoa location due to the availability of parking. Most of the menu items here are served pretty quickly. Also, for the price point, the flavors are terrific. As long as the quality of the food remains the same, and the prices remain affordable, this place gets five stars. 6/1/2018 update: Tried the Thai Style pho as well as the Summer Rolls. I was impressed with both dishes. The Thai style pho had a generous amount of meat, onions, fried garlic and other things in there. I also like the thicker noodles. The summer rolls were also tasty and had thinner noodles in them as well as no sprouts.

Good, but waaaaay too much basil! I limited the "a" to 5 for those who really like basil, but it was like 1/4 of the dish!

Bangkok chef is a quick, affordable and delicious Thai food place near the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus. The staff here are friendly and welcoming. The food is filled with fresh flavors of basil, ginger, lime leaves etc. My only complaint is that the amount of protein is less compared to the rice provided.
