A Taste of Vietnam in the Heart of Kaimuki

Stepping into Bac Nam feels like discovering a well-kept secret in the Kaimuki neighborhood of Honolulu. This isn’t a spot for those seeking white tablecloths; instead, it offers a functional, no-frills dining room where the focus remains entirely on the bowl in front of you. The air carries a savory, deep aroma of star anise and simmering marrow, signals that the kitchen is hard at work on their traditional Vietnamese staples.

The Culinary Highlights

The menu is anchored by their signature salt and pepper crab, a dish that arrives with a formidable shell-cracking challenge but rewards diners with succulent, garlic-infused meat. Locals often prioritize their clay pot dishes and the aromatic pho, which features a broth clear enough to see the rice noodles clearly yet packed with complex, slow-cooked depth. If you visit, keep in mind that the space is compact and can get quite boisterous during the dinner rush as groups gather around large, round tables to share communal platters.

Why Locals Keep Coming Back

Bac Nam has built its reputation on consistency rather than flare. It is an ideal destination for families or groups of friends who value flavor profiles that stay true to Southern Vietnamese roots. While parking on the nearby side streets can require a bit of patience during peak weekend hours, the reward is a meal that eschews modern trends for the comforting reliability of authentic, scratch-made cooking. It remains a cornerstone for those in Honolulu who crave genuine, unpretentious Asian cuisine.

Family owned and operated, excellent food; a classic, lowkey gem. I feel privileged to have been a customer for a long time. This local favorite spot for Vietnamese food is made with high quality ingredients and sends you home not just with the lovely flavors lingering but a sense of wellbeing. Nothing really warms you like a good pho some days; they take no shortcuts with the home made broth which as you know if you ever thought “oh I’ll just make that at home,” takes *all* *day* to make pho broth. )Some places, not naming names, take some easy shortcuts on the broth. It’s tasty but when you walk out, your body feels it differently. Bac nam makes their own from scratch and it is legit. Ono and much healthier (in my opinion.) Thank you Bac Nam!

This place has dishes that I cannot find at many other Viet restaurants. Yummy and hit the spot for me when I was craving my parent’s food!

No gimmicks, just delicious food made with love. Lots of menu options not commonly seen at other Vietnamese places on the island. Food felt healthy and nourishing. We had the lotus root salad, lemongrass chicken, and steamed dumplings, all were delicious and can't wait to return to try more dishes! I'm only sad that I didn't discover it sooner.

Good location, service is average, food average. I asked well done steak pho and they brought medium rare steak pho. I go many pho restaurants and good thing about this restaurant is location. Ac was poor inside restaurant and when too many people inside it is hard to breath.

This unassuming restaurant boasts overall good Vietnamese food and decent prices compared to other VN restaurants. Service is friendly and helpful. We liked the appetizers the best, especially the Stuffed Fried Chicken Wings and Green Papaya Salad. Pho is also very good with a decent broth, accompanied by plentiful basil and sawtooth herbs. Portions are large and should be shared. Street parking is free after 6 pm, and there's also parking behind the restaurant.

Having worked nearby for years, I’ve consistently ordered lunch and takeout from Bac Nam. It’s a staple for locals and is also very popular with Japanese tourists, especially during the lunch rush. The prices are fair, and the portions are generous. The restaurant has a great family-business feel. One thing to note is the parking—they have a dedicated lot off King Street, but it’s very tight and tricky to navigate. Street parking is available, but pay close attention to the time restrictions. Also, a "pro-tip" for calling in orders: if you get a busy signal, it’s likely because their phone line and credit card machine are connected! If they are processing a payment, the line stays busy. It’s a true family operation. The husband runs the front of the house, and he’s friendly—if you come in a few times, he’ll likely remember your order by heart. While I find the Pho and rice dishes to be pretty standard, the Tofu Curry is the absolute star of the menu. It is my go-to every single time. I highly recommend ordering it with a side of rice and asking for extra onions on top—it’s the perfect combination. Highly recommended for the good food and welcoming atmosphere.

This place is pretty expensive for what it offers. One summer roll is $4.25, which already feels steep. My biggest issue, though, is the curry pricing. The curry is their most popular item, yet you have to pay an extra $3 just to get rice or bread. So without that, you’re essentially paying to eat curry sauce by itself—which doesn’t really make sense. It would make much more sense to price the dish slightly higher and just include the rice or bread. That said, the chicken curry itself was good. Unfortunately, the rare steak pho was underwhelming.

This is an excellent, small, family owned and run Vietnamese restaurant. They have a very diverse, tasty menu items. My favorite is the curry crab and garlic fried rice. But, YOU won't be disappointed with any menu item. My friends from Japan and I just happened upon Bac Nam. We had just visited the Makiki Christian Church around the corner. Our party needed a rest. We were tired of walking. And, we all desperately required a good, healthy, tasty and filling meal. So, we decided to try Bac Nam Restaurant. What an unbelieveable find. The dishes are absolutely delicious. We had no introductions to this restaurant. But, the kind family style service and stunning dish flavors immediately won us over. And, since then, I have become a long-time, dedicated fan of theirs. My favorite is the combination of curry crab and garlic fried rice. Some of the restaurant patrons, who passed by my table, nodded and remarked that the dish was one of their favorites too. Later, I discovered that customers from all over Japan including as far north as Hokkaido, are their devoted patrons. My Vietnamese friends, who later came to Hawaii from Boston for a visit, also gave their full, strong stamp of approval along with their seal of authenticity. For all these reasons, I highly recommend the Bac Nam Restaurant for your's and your family's next stop. Give them a try. I believe, you will not be disappointed.

We went here years ago and I had to come back when I got here this year too! Such a great spot. We got the pho, chicken curry and stuffed chicken wings 👌🏾🤤 We shared these three plates and grabbed rice. Plenty food for the two of us :) enjoy!

The facility is very clean and cozy. There's even a second room with longer tables to accommodate larger groups. There is plenty of free parking behind the restaurant with additional metered parking out front if necessary. The staff is very friendly and courteous. The food was delicious and was like home cooking. It's really authentic Vietnamese food when you want to get away from the tourists influences.
