Ba Le Sandwich Shop
About
A Chinatown Staple for Crispy Crusts
In the bustling heart of Honolulu's Chinatown, Ba Le Sandwich Shop stands as a local institution for those chasing the perfect banh mi. The moment you step off the sidewalk, the scent of toasted French bread and savory pâté fills the air, cutting through the humid island breeze. It is a no-frills, utilitarian space where the focus remains entirely on the construction of the sandwich.
The Art of the Banh Mi
The kitchen is celebrated for its house-baked baguettes, which achieve that elusive balance of a shattering, thin crust and an airy, soft interior. The signature lemongrass chicken and the classic combo banh mi—layered with house-made head cheese and pork roll—are the menu standouts. Each sandwich arrives tightly wrapped in paper, packed with crisp pickled daikon and carrots, fresh cilantro, and enough sliced jalapeño to provide a sharp, clean heat. It is straightforward, quick, and undeniably satisfying.
Local Character
Dining here is a fast-paced affair. You might find yourself waiting in a short queue alongside local workers on their lunch break or visitors wandering through the historic district. The space is tight, and seating is limited, so many regulars prefer to grab their sandwiches to-go and head toward the nearby waterfront or Aala Park. While the shop maintains a modest, unassuming aesthetic, the efficiency of the staff and the consistent quality of the rolls keep it a favorite for anyone seeking an authentic Vietnamese lunch in downtown Honolulu.

I'm in Honolulu several times per year, and this is an off the strip restaurant I love eating at, at least once during each trip. The food is so good I over indulge, and even get something to go after I'm full. I haven't tried the entire menu, but everything I've ordered, I've finished. And there hasn't been one dish I wouldn't order again or recommend. Super friendly staff. Variety of drinks; all tge expected stuff, plus a selection that you may not be familiar with. Just one note, if it's late in the day/evening, they may run out of certain dishes or ingredients.

We ate here all three nights we were in Honolulu. The lemongrass chicken is so flavorful, and the teriyaki chicken was divine! We had summer rolls each night with a perfect peanut sauce. Shrimp or chicken pad Thai are also great choices. Finish off with coconut tapioca. We’ve been on the road for over three weeks, covering over 8800 miles. This is the only place we’ve thoroughly enjoyed and visited more than once. The friendly and hard working staff round out the perfect experience.

We also took out two combo sandwiches. Great service, the food is more Thai style when it comes to the pho, the sandwiches were packed and was worth the price. I enjoyed my Thai ice coffee as well. Not sure why pad Thai here doesn't also add tofu, it'll be so much better if it did.
