Island Flavors in the Heart of Kalihi
When you pull up to this neighborhood staple in the Kalihi district of Honolulu, don’t expect a traditional scoop shop. Asato Family Shop began its journey as a boutique snack stop, but it has carved out a permanent place in the local food scene through its house-made, small-batch ice cream. The vibe is casual and authentic—the kind of place where you stop by mid-afternoon to grab a carton before heading home.
The Flavors That Define the Shop
The menu focuses on local ingredients, turning tropical staples into creamy, dense masterpieces. You’ll find rotating specials like Kona coffee, lilikoi, and Calamansi, which hit that perfect balance of tart and sweet. The texture is noticeably rich, reflecting a process that prioritizes quality over speed. If you are a fan of traditional island desserts, you will likely spot a nod to local favorites in their creative rotations.
What to Expect When You Arrive
The space is functional and no-frills, designed for quick pickups rather than lingering over a sundae in a booth. Be prepared to navigate the typical bustling parking conditions of this industrial-adjacent area; it’s part of the local charm. You will often hear the hum of the cooling units and the chatter of regulars who know exactly which pint they are after before they even reach the counter. It’s the ultimate destination for anyone craving an honest, locally-crafted treat that avoids the tourist-heavy crowds of Waikiki. Just keep in mind that they often sell out of the most popular batches early, so checking their latest drop schedule is a pro move if you have your heart set on a specific flavor.

Dare I say this is now my favorite frozen dessert shop on the island??? It's IN CRE D IB L E. They absolutely nailed the flavors... If it says it taste like strawberry, green River or passion orange, even the lemon peel gummy bear, it literally taste exactly like that item in sherbet consistency. I got the green river and the passion orange and both were amazing. The Passion Orange tasted just like the Hawaiian airline juice cups, but in sherbet form. Asatos truly found a way to make the flavors burst in your mouth! Additionally, I was so pleased that they gave me a 15% kamaaina discount!!! To find it, you have to go inside Kings & Queens clothing store. It's a bit hard to find from the main Kalakaua street, but just go inside the surf shop and walk to the back left corner. Staff was super friendly. I think I will crave their sherbert!

Their sorbet is absolutely delicious fresh, sweet, and rich. I especially love the passion fruit flavor, but honestly, every flavor I’ve tried has been amazing. The new Waikiki location is super cool, and even the cups are adorable. Highly recommend!

Some of the best sherbet and sorbet I’ve ever had. Their constant innovation of different flavors every month and sometimes weekly keeps everyone on their toes, wanting more. Everyone is very friendly and willing to answer any questions you may have on any flavor. They accept cash and card. 12/10. Definitely get the classic flavors as well as their sauces!! So good.
