A Kaimuki Culinary Staple

Stepping into Asahi Grill in the heart of Kaimuki feels like catching up with an old friend. This neighborhood hub is where Honolulu locals gather for comfort food that avoids the fuss of fine dining. The air carries the rich, savory steam of their legendary Oxtail Soup, a dish so essential to the island’s food scene that it defines the rhythm of the kitchen. You will find the broth clear, balanced with ginger, and served with a side of shoyu, chili peppers, and cilantro that you can customize to your exact liking.

The Oxtail Experience

While the menu is expansive, the Oxtail Soup remains the undisputed king here. The meat practically falls off the bone, offering a tender texture that requires no effort. Beyond the soup, regulars often gravitate toward the Loco Moco or the various local-style plate lunches that embody the spirit of Hawaiian home cooking. The dining room maintains a no-frills, utilitarian charm—it’s bright, efficient, and built for people who are serious about their lunch break.

Finding Your Seat

Because it is a favorite for the after-work crowd and weekend families, the pace can get frantic during peak hours. You might notice the buzz of conversation bouncing off the walls, and while parking in this part of Honolulu can occasionally test your patience, the payoff is a satisfying, authentic meal. Whether you are grabbing a quick bowl of soup or settling in with friends for a hearty plate, this spot serves as a true slice of daily Kaimuki life.

I’ve been here several times and it’s been generally good. The service is decent. The food is great overall. I think their Chicken Katsu and Chicken Katsu Curry plates are very good. Their Beef Stew is one of the best I’ve had on island, with the bonus of it being one of the cheaper options on the menu. During my most recent visit I finally tried their Loco Moco. It definitely did not taste as good as Loco Mocos I’ve had elsewhere, even compared to L&L and Zippy’s. The beef and gravy seemed to have weird seasoning. Or maybe it was just old since my stomach felt weird after I ate it. Update: lowering my review from 4 stars to 2 stars since things feel like they’ve been slipping. The past two times I ordered takeout, I’ve had to wait three times longer than the estimate they originally gave. The first time I had to wait 45 minutes for my food when the estimate was 15 minutes, and the second time I had to wait 30 minutes when the estimate was 10 minutes. The restaurant wasn’t even that crowded either time. Additionally, my most recent order of chicken katsu curry was tough and the dish had a vinegary, adobo taste. Did they mix up the pots during cooking?

We love Asahi Grill, the one on WAIALAE AVENUE. We came after the remodel, with the new owners, and had the oxtail soap. It did not disappoint. We were on a search for the best oxtail soup in Honolulu, and we finally found it. If anyone loves oxtail soup like us, hands down, this is the place. Can’t wait to come back.

Restaurant has an old comfy restaurant that is casual. Food is overall good and they're known for their oxtail soup. Presentation is not formal and primarily has local comfort food. If you're looking for a quick and tasty meal, this restaurant won't disappoint.

Came here just for the oxtail soup and it did not disappoint. It was so delicious and exactly what I was expecting. It was such a treat as I can’t find a decent bowl of oxtail soup where I currently live. The wait staff was hospitable and the service was quick.

Came here for the oxtail soup and it was perfect! We also ordered ramen and fried rice. Both were okay. Small place. Homely. Don’t take a date there for a romantic dinner but it’s perfect for casual dinner with friends.

The Hubby and I loved this place before COVID-19 and was happy to try and dine-in and get some of our favorites. It wasn't crowded at all when we went. There was only one other table being used. They had a limited menu which seems to be normal for most dine-in places nowadays. No biggie, they had their awesome lup cheong fried rice, YUMMY! The place was clean. Service was gracious and friendly as usual. Definitely recommend taking out or dining in. Clean. Good food. Great service.
