Handcrafted Traditions in the Heart of Merchant Street
Stepping into Allegrini Mozzarella in the historic Merchant Street district feels like finding a quiet corner of Italy within the bustling urban core of Honolulu. This isn't your typical quick-stop lunch spot; it is a dedicated showcase of the art of cheese-making. The air here carries the faint, clean scent of fresh whey and sea salt, a refreshing departure from the usual downtown office smells.
The Mozzarella Craft
Chef and owner Tiziano Allegrini brought his authentic Venetian heritage directly to the Pacific. The centerpiece of the menu is undoubtedly the house-made burrata and mozzarella, stretched daily with a precision that borders on surgical. The texture is impossibly creamy, yielding to the bite with a richness that highlights the quality of the local Hawaiian dairy used in the process. Pair a plate of their signature caprese with a slice of house-baked focaccia, and you have a lunch that prioritizes quality over quantity.
Refined Simplicity
The space is minimalist and functional—an industrial-chic room with high ceilings that can get a bit boisterous when the lunch hour hits its peak. It is best suited for those who appreciate a slow, deliberate meal or professionals looking to impress a client with something distinct from the usual Waikiki tourist traps. Keep in mind that seating is limited, and the open-concept kitchen means you might catch a bit of flour dust on your blazer if you sit too close to the prep station, but the trade-off is watching a master at work.
For those navigating the downtown Honolulu grid, it serves as a necessary culinary anchor. Whether you are grabbing a container of fresh-stretched mozzarella to take home or settling in for an afternoon pasta dish, Allegrini remains one of the few places in town where the process is just as important as the final product.

I ordered bruschetta. It literally was just 5 pieces of bread with arugula, tomato, olive oil, and balsamic vinaigrette. I was unaware that they didn't put any mozzarella much less if they even use mozzarella at all on the bruschetta. For the price of $14 dollars for five pieces of bread, I could have easily paid another establishment for a bigger, heartier salad.

Beautiful sandwiches and service. Completely authentic and delicious. The hallway to eat in is a bit snug and not what I would ever plan on, if you live in town it's a dream. Really really good across the board.

We lived in Italy for a couple of years, and this was the first time we had an authentic taste of Italian food again since we arrived in Hawaii two years ago. We have tried multiple Italian restaurants on the island but cannot compare them with Allegrini. We will be back for more. Grazie mille.

I went in at 12:00pm on 5/15/23 to order a charcuterie. The young lady who took my order said it would take 20 minutes. I was willing to wait. However, people who placed their orders after me got theirs. I already waited 30 minutes and had to return to work. I asked the woman about my order and it looked like they only started on it. I asked her what time they close so I could come back later. She said 3:00. Well, my afternoon at the office was busy and I couldn't make it back. I kept the receipt and will return for a refund or my order.

I ordered a pesto pizza and was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. I'm fine with a wait if the food earns it, but after 30 minutes I asked for an update, and found that they had forgotten my order completely. I saw them make it using Kirkland brand pesto and a pre-cooked dough, which made the final product look like school cafeteria food. The $15 price tag, 40 minute wait, and low quality product made the experience memorably disappointing, and sharing it for others to see seemed like the only way to get something positive out of this.
