Ala Moana Hotel
About
A Culinary Anchor in Honolulu
Positioned at the bustling intersection of Kona and Atkinson Drive, this iconic Honolulu destination offers more than just a place to sleep. It serves as a central hub for those looking to experience local Hawaiian hospitality right on the edge of the world’s largest open-air shopping center. The dining atmosphere leans into the breezy, relaxed pace of life in the islands, making it a reliable spot for business travelers and tourists eager to drop their bags and grab a quick, satisfying meal.
The Sensory Experience
Step inside and you are immediately met with the low hum of travelers planning their day and the faint, sweet scent of tropical blooms drifting from the lobby. The spaces here are airy with floor-to-ceiling windows that capture the intense, golden afternoon light reflecting off the Pacific nearby. It isn't a place for hushed, formal whispers; the energy is distinctly urban and functional, perfect for a casual lunch or a pre-shopping fuel-up.
Local Observations
While the accessibility to the surrounding urban landscape is the primary draw, visitors should prepare for the typical high-traffic nature of the area. Parking can get competitive during peak hours, and the lobby can feel quite spirited during check-in times. However, for those seeking a convenient home base that links the convenience of Honolulu city living with a classic island aesthetic, the dining and social areas provide a straightforward, no-nonsense experience that keeps guests returning.

I truly enjoyed my stay at the Ala Moana Hotel. The staff were incredibly accommodating and went out of their way to make me feel welcome. The hotel’s convenience is a huge plus, with easy access to shopping, dining, and transportation. On top of that, the customer service was awesome from start to finish. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to others.

The hotel property and amenities were awesome. We were troubled a few nights during our sleep by the noise on the streets (homeless people screeching, cars honking, loud generator noises). 10/10 for the staff, who were all very professional and polite. Conveniently located near the Ala Moana Park/Beach and the shopping center, with several bus stops within a few mins of walking from the hotel, that can practically take you everywhere on the island. We rented a car for a few days and parked it on the 2nd level of the Ala Moana shopping center, which is directly connected to the hotel via a skybridge. I would highly recommend booking a parking spot via the SpotHero app for this, costed us about 67$ for 3 days. The breakfast selection at Cafe 410 was good, but it was the same menu every single day, so it got quite repetitive for us by the end of the week. But overall, I would definitely stay here again.

Main reason we chose this hotel is it’s literally connected to the mall so we can walk over for more food options and of course last minute shopping. The rooms are regular size for hotel rooms in Hawaii and cute. A downside is that we saw a few bugs.. which is understandable cause it’s Hawaii and since we were raised here.. we’re used to the bugs.. but I can’t imagine others finding them. I didn’t care for the pool because it was not kid friendly.. the shallow area is almost 3’ ish and the deepest is 9’.. so my small nephews couldn’t enjoy it much. The best thing about this hotel is it’s Hawaiian breakfast buffet.. one of the cheapest one on the island and worth it.. would totally come again for this alone haha. Also it was cool they had free water stations on certain floors to fill up your water bottles.

Almost a home a few miles from home. If I were to choose a hotel to do a staycation, it still be Ala Moana Hotel. Location convenient, mall is just right there and the beach is across. No fuss bout getting to the freeway or even getting out of Waikiki. The rooms especially the suite is amazing. Simple but fresh and still feels like being in the comfort of your own home or space.

The manager Lawrence was not accommodating to us and stated a different statement than another employee, 2 different employees. My family and I had a 1 bedroom suite and we had asked for a late checkout. We were told that we can pay for a late check out and we were given prices. I told the representative we would be back, 5 minutes later after ordering Starbucks only a few steps away from the counter. I return to extend for the next day- Lawrence stated we cannot pay for late check out because somebody had booked our room and they were sold out. I go onto the website and indeed there was available rooms. The next day I go to the front desk and ask to pay for late check out and availability. Another new staff checked and stated they would be able to grant the late check out for the cost. So all the manager had to do was attempt to shift some rooms and reservations around to prevent our family to having to pack and move rooms. The housekeeping would have to clean and get a room ready when we could’ve just stayed in our room and the new guests can go to another suite on another floor. Additionally, our family ensures we do not have housekeeping continuously come to our room to clean. We even utilize the laundry room. I wish the management and leadership did better to make our stay memorable.

While I found the room comfortable and clean and the staff very nice. I was charged a $30 resort fee. When I inquired at check out what the fee included, the woman at reception told me that even though I was not made aware of the resort fee “amenities” upon check in as I should have been, she would not waive the fee and offered me a water bottle. A call to hotel management has not been returned. I therefore cannot recommend a hotel that charges for services they do not provide. UPDATE TO THIS REVIEW I received a call from the hotel after I posted the original review. The manager was very apologetic and informed me that she would credit my card the amount of the fee. She also assured me that she will review the situation with her staff to avoid similar situations in the future. In that they resolved the issue, I have changed my review from 2 stars to 4 stars. FURTHER UPDATE TO THIS REVIEW After what I thought was a very nice phone call offering to credit me the fee, I am reducing to two stars again because I never got the credit. It truly is not about the $30 fee, but instead about the lack of customer service and not living up to what they offered.

The hotel has a great location, situated right next to a mall and within about 10 minutes of a nearby beach. Overall, the beds in the room were comfortable, and I appreciated having access to a microwave during my stay. Unfortunately, there were a few issues that affected my experience. The biggest concern was cleanliness, as I found hair on the bathroom walls, in the sink, and on the floor, which felt unpleasant and unhygienic. Upon check-in, very little information was provided about the hotel’s amenities. There was no clear signage directing guests to the pool or fitness center, which I later discovered was located on the third floor. The towel policy was also frustrating. Guests are reportedly charged $25 if towels are not returned during certain hours. When I asked whether I could simply return them to the front desk, I was told no, and the response felt unwelcoming. While the location and room comfort were positives, better cleanliness, clearer communication about amenities, and a more guest-friendly towel process would greatly improve the overall experience.
