A Slice of Tokyo in Waikiki

Stepping into Akasaka feels like a sudden departure from the humid bustle of Honolulu. Tucked away near the Ala Moana corridor, this spot captures the hushed, intentional energy of a traditional Japanese izakaya. The air is typically filled with the faint, savory aroma of charcoal-grilled yakitori and the sharp, clean scent of fresh ginger, cutting through the steam rising from open kitchen stations.

Savoring the Craft

This is where local residents head for a late-night fix of authentic sashimi and expertly prepared sushi rolls. The menu centers on precision; their signature chirashi bowls are packed with generous cuts of fish that arrive chilled and vibrant. Regulars often bypass the standard offerings to ask for the day’s specials, which might include simmered butterfish or crisp, golden-fried soft-shell crab that provides a satisfying, salty crunch.

The Intimate Details

The layout is compact, favoring efficiency over sprawl. You will likely find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with other diners, making it a perfect spot for solo adventurers or couples looking for a no-frills, high-quality meal. Be mindful that during peak dinner hours, the space echoes with the clatter of ceramic plates and animated conversations, creating a lively, almost communal roar. Parking in this part of town can be a bit of a challenge, so plan your arrival accordingly to avoid circling the block. Whether you are craving a quiet bowl of steaming udon or a spread of fresh nigiri, this neighborhood staple remains a go-to for those who value fresh ingredients over elaborate decor.

My wife and I stopped by this little restaurant near the end of our vacation. It was within walking distance of our hotel (Ala Moana). Being honest we wnt at night and the location was a little off putting being tucked away near an alley and other "businesses". That being said, the restaurant was small but cozy. It had a traditional atmosphere inside as well as a great selection of japanese food. The food was fantastic and service staff was small but they were attentive. There is adequate parking directly in front of the establishment but it is a pretty dark area. The staff were very friendly and helpful. This is a great location to stop in for a bite with a partner. Will definitely go again when I am back in Honolulu

We stumbled on this place by accident and it was such a great find. We had the teriyaki plate with rice and miso soup. It was delicious. The beef was crunchy and perfectly cooked. The rice was good too.

Traditional spot with excellent food! The rolls were delicious and the shashimi was some of the freshest and best tasting I’ve ever had. The Bluefin Otoro I had (see pic) was super fatty and well worth the price. Highly recommend to try this place if you’re looking for fresh sushi or in the area looking for a good place to eat.

Wow!!!! What a delicious meal. Went twice during my visit to Honolulu. The Uni was incredibly fresh and the toro was perfectly fatty. The marinated fish was a must have, we all wished we had ordered more! Service was great. Worth stopping in for!

We didn't make a Reservation (highly recommended) but were seated rather quickly. We were seated in the traditional dining area which was amazing! The Scallop Butteryaki is definitely recommended. Had the Soft shelled Crab roll, Spicy tuna and Salmon rolls. All of it was absolutely delicious! For the price you definitely get what you pay for and then some.
