A Masterclass in Bincho-tan Grilling

Stepping into Aburiya Ibushi feels like slipping into a side-street alleyway in Tokyo. Tucked away in the heart of Honolulu, this izakaya eschews the typical tourist fanfare in favor of a smoky, rhythmic authenticity centered entirely around the bincho-tan charcoal grill. The air carries the sharp, savory scent of searing chicken skin and charred scallions, a smell that clings to your clothes just enough to remind you that you ate well.

The Art of the Skewer

The kitchen operates with surgical precision, specializing in traditional Japanese yakitori. Chef-driven plates highlight the beauty of simplicity; the chicken thigh skewers, crispy on the outside and dripping with rendered juices, are finished with a dusting of sea salt that cracks against the palate. Beyond the skewers, the menu leans into izakaya-style comfort food, featuring silky, house-made tofu and bowls of rich, fermented goodness. Their selection of premium sake and shochu is curated to cut through the smokiness of the grill, making it an ideal spot for those who appreciate a slow, contemplative meal.

Honolulu’s Best Kept Secret

This is a place for the crowd that prefers conversation over music. The space is intimate, often characterized by a bustling hum of diners and the occasional clang of grill tongs. Be prepared for a cozy, tight-knit seating arrangement—it is an authentic squeeze that forces you to rub elbows with neighbors. While parking in this part of Honolulu can require a bit of patience, the reward is a genuine taste of Japan that feels worlds away from the nearby beach crowds. It is the perfect haunt for night owls looking to wind down with a cold draft beer and a perfectly charred selection of seasonal bites.

Every single dish was a hit! This place absolutely gives Japanese izakaya bar vibes. Service was prompt and attentive. We samples a variety of dishes and ordered more midway because they were all so good. The simple grilled mochi ice cream with red bean sealed the deal for us. There was a short wait to get seated but it was well worth the time. We'll definitely be back!

This place is just too good. A gem in Honolulu. Very reasonable price and unbelievable portion (especially considering it’s a Japanese restaurant). Cold tofu is very refreshing. Beef tongue is tender. All the grilled meat tastes great! You can literally see the fire. Oxtail porridge is very comforting. Everything is of great portions. I visited it last time I came to Honolulu and do not regret coming here again this time. Will visit in the future too!

Decided to try Aburiya Inushi and the food and service were great. Do not let the slightly worn and rough around the edges interior fool you, it is actually a great place to have a meal. We tried many dishes, I'm always surprised when the vegetables dishes are done very well, it shows that the same attention will be given to the other dishes. That being said, highly recommend the potato salad, I think it's the seasoning they put on top but regardless,it's a must. Also with the eggplant and minced meat is very good. For the meat eaters, definitely get the pork belly, it was delicious, especially with the light char on the meat, I just wish the prok belly was placed on the cabbage instead of sitting in the juice, but it still tasted great. The barbecue beef tongue was tender and delicious, especially when paired with the greens and wasabi. The barbecued skirt steak was very tender and cooked perfectly. The fried octopus was just okay. The rest of the dishes we had like the sausages and mushrooms were good. Overall, it is a very comfortable place and the food is tasty. Definitely need to make reservations a day or two prior because it gets busy in the evenings.
