About
A Kaka’ako Morning Ritual
Stepping into 9bar HNL feels like stepping into the engine room of the Kaka’ako creative district. It is a no-frills, high-octane space where the aroma of freshly roasted beans cuts through the salt air drifting in from the Honolulu harbor. The industrial aesthetic—exposed concrete, minimalist metal finishes, and an unpretentious counter—makes this the preferred haunt for local creatives, early-rising surfers, and anyone needing a serious caffeine jolt before diving into their workday.
The Craft Behind the Cup
This isn't your average quick-stop café. The baristas treat every pour-over with the precision of a laboratory experiment. Their menu highlights single-origin roasts that lean into bright, acidic notes, though you will find plenty of crowd-pleasing, velvety lattes that pair perfectly with their rotating selection of locally baked pastries. If you arrive mid-morning, you might find the space humming with the low, steady grind of coffee beans and the rhythmic clatter of ceramics hitting marble.
The Local Pulse
While the coffee is the primary draw, the vibe is what keeps the regulars coming back. It’s tight quarters; you’ll likely find yourself elbow-to-elbow with a graphic designer or a tech entrepreneur. The proximity to the Salt complex makes it an ideal anchor for a morning stroll through the neighborhood’s famous mural-covered alleys. Be warned: the acoustics can get a bit punchy when the mid-morning rush hits, and seating is a hot commodity, so don't be surprised if you end up sipping your espresso standing up at the bar—which, honestly, feels like the right way to enjoy it anyway.

Stopped by 9Bar HNL in the morning to hang out with a friend and really enjoyed it! I got an iced latte and a blueberry cream cheese scone. The scone wasn’t too sweet, just right, and had a nice texture. The latte was delicious and well-made, and I appreciated that they offer lots of syrup flavors and milk alternatives to customize your drink. The cashier was super friendly and kind, which made the visit even better. The ambiance was great: bright, modern, and welcoming. It was definitely busy and a bit crowded when we went, and there weren’t any seats available inside, but we managed to find a spot outside to sit and chat. Overall, such a nice local café to grab coffee, relax, and catch up with friends. I’ll definitely be back!

Super 'ono big warm scones (and they do have some savory options!) that are properly light and moist with a crisp exterior, and their black sesame iced latte is so delicious- deeply nutty and not too sweet with the characteristic graininess of finely ground sesame, and I love that particular mouthfeel. Would love to try other scone flavors- today just got the cream cheese and peach!

Everyone here is amazing. The staff are super nice and will not only remember who you are but what you order. Kristin, Monica, and Zach always talk to me when I come in. The espresso is always perfect whether it's a normal latte or a specialty one. Sometimes they even have seasonal drinks. They had a black forest latte that was out of this world. The scuffins are also all great. My favorite is the bacon and cheese one, but the everything bagel is awesome as well. The chocolate macadamia is my favorite sweet version. Their bakers are very consistent! The giant cookies are delicious as well. This place is definitely worth walking 30m past Starbucks for infinitely better coffee and pastries.
