A Slice of Hong Kong in the Heart of Honolulu

Tucked away near the bustling Kapiolani corridor, 8 Fat Fat 8 serves as a long-standing sanctuary for those craving authentic Cantonese soul food. The space carries a no-frills, utilitarian energy that prioritizes the plate over the polish. It is the kind of room where the clatter of ceramic dishes against tables provides a constant, rhythmic soundtrack, and the fluorescent lighting casts a bright, honest glow over steaming bowls of congee.

The Cantonese Connection

This establishment has earned a loyal following among Honolulu locals for its commitment to classic, traditional recipes. The menu is an extensive map of Hong Kong-style comfort. Patrons frequent the spot for their signature Salt and Pepper Pork Chops, which arrive perfectly fried with a jagged, crunchy exterior that gives way to tender meat. The texture play here is deliberate and satisfying, balanced by the sharp heat of fresh chili and garlic. Their ginger scallion chicken is another staple, fragrant with aromatics that hit you the moment the dish exits the kitchen.

Know Before You Go

While the food is a masterclass in consistency, be prepared for a bit of a challenge when it comes to arrival. Parking in this part of the city can be notoriously tight, especially during the peak lunch rush. It is best to approach with patience or use a ride-share service. Once inside, don't expect a whisper-quiet fine dining atmosphere; this is a place for animated conversations and rapid service. It is ideal for a quick, hearty meal with friends or a low-pressure dinner where the focus is entirely on the quality of the wok-fired flavors.

I can not recommend this place highly enough. I read a review and knew I had to go there. It was our first time visiting Honolulu. We had the Fat Fat Special chicken. Best chicken ever!! We were immediately put at ease walking into, what seemed like a local bar. The staff were incredibly friendly. The food AMAZING. Everything was priced very reasonably. When I return to Honolulu I will go back as often as possible. Well done !

My kind of dive bar. Great drinks, pool, darts, and good atmosphere. A good amount of space and large tables for groups. I have read and heard their food is top notch over some restaurants. They have high grade sashimi. I myself on my first visit did not try any food, but when I return I definitely will.

We are visiting from SF and Boston and found this place on Eater. The food was amazing! We first got the beef mapo tofu, stir fried ong choy, and rice. While the beef mapo tofu was not very authentic in that it wasn’t numbing and spicy, it was absolutely delicious. The stir fried ong choy was shockingly good, so we ordered a second plate of it. For the second round, we also go the beef chow fun and potstickers, both of which lived up to our expectation. We were so busy eating that we only took a picture of the first dish (beef mapo tofu) that came out. The service was friendly and warm. We had a good conversation with our waitress, and she gave great recommendations on the food. The vibe was heartwarming too. Many customers when we were there seemed to be regulars, cheering for and chatting about the game that was on. We would be excited to come back to this place next time we are in Oahu!

This is a family run dive bar with great music and delicious eats. We tried several dishes, all excellent. Note the fat fat special chicken takes ~30 minutes so order early if you want that! We tried the spicy gaugee, fat fat special chicken, a side of kimchee, and shoyu braised pork belly with bao buns. All were so tasty and perfect portions for two to share. We finished every bite of each dish. Wanted to order more but were plenty full at that point. Beers and drinks were cold and prompt. Music was chill and the vibe overall was very welcoming, with multiple servers checking on us, and a couple boisterous tables as the night went on.

They've done it right since opening during the latter part of Covid and continue to keep their guests safe and comfortable. Service is better than ever with a few new faces, casual and old school, neighborhood style. Bottom line though, food is better than ever. They're known for their food menu and rest assured, you won't be disappointed! Pretty sure they've increased their customer base because of everything they've done this past year, and being consistent on the food. Way to go owners and staff! 4/2023 Nice and still ono food. Call to make a rez on Fridays after work. ✌️

This is a perfect dive bar to watch football, drink cheap drinks, and enjoy Chinese bar food. Prices are great. But don't expect some fancy bar. This is the local bar you come to to hang out and catch a game. It's the type of place folks have been going to for decades.

Still one the best places to chill and get great food. The service is always awesome. I love the old school bar feel, you can feel at home and no need to dress up. Oh and they make great drinks from old fashions to high balls... or just have a cold beer. They have such great Chinese style pupus and dishes ...

I’ve been looking for authentic tasting Chinese food for ages (and just moved back to Hawaii and knew I’d find some here). Food was great, prices are reasonable, service was great even though the place was busy. So fun to find this gem in a dive bar setting. This will be one of my local restaurant rotationals for sure and I’ll be spreading the word to my mates about this place. I parked on street and then realized there’s a parking lot for the restaurant too. It keeps getting better haha. Mahalo 8 Fat Fat 8!!! See you again soon.
