A Gateway to Old Saigon in Kakaako

Stepping into 1938 Indochine feels like slipping into a black-and-white photograph of colonial Southeast Asia. Located amidst the creative energy of the Kakaako district, the space trades neon modernism for dark wood accents and rhythmic, slow-tempo jazz that drifts through the air. It is a quiet sanctuary for those who prefer their dinner with a side of historical intrigue rather than the typical Honolulu tourist bustle.

The Culinary Connection

The menu pays homage to the French-Vietnamese fusion born during the 1930s. The signature Pho rolls offer a creative twist on traditional flavors, wrapping fresh herbs and savory proteins in delicate rice paper, while their classic beef pho remains a staple for those seeking a fragrant, star anise-heavy broth. Each dish arrives with an aromatic steam that hits the senses before you even pick up your chopsticks.

Atmospheric Nuances

The atmosphere is intimate, bordering on moody, making it an ideal hideaway for a date night where conversation matters more than spectacle. Be aware that the lighting is intentionally dim; you might find yourself leaning in close to read the menu print. While the service keeps a steady pace, the dining room retains a relaxed, unhurried cadence that encourages lingering over a final cup of robust Vietnamese coffee. It is a refreshing departure from the frantic, high-turnover establishments found closer to the Waikiki shoreline.

We stopped by as a group of 12 for dinner. All the signature dishes we ate tasted great, but the portions are probably best suited for 2-4 people so we ordered multiples of everything. The frog legs were a big hit all around, even with the people that had never eaten frog legs before. The decor of the restaurant had a very nice atmosphere, and overall the restaurant had a very nice feel. The cocktails we had were all great as well. They do offer cigars, but we did not get a chance to try them due to our schedule.

Everything we got was good! The lemongrass fries taste like regular fries, nothing special. The rolls didn’t have a lot of pork inside.

My work had a get-together this weekend. Staff was great. Special thanks to Phoebe who was above and beyond in helping me with the parking app. She was very courteous and helpful despite the restaurant being busy that evening. Our bartender at the mezzanine on April 4 (sorry I did not get his name) was also a super nice guy! Giving 5 stars for food, service, and ambiance.

I’ve been on island for a week, eating out each night. This is by far some of the best food I’ve had and the service was amazing! Waiter was nice and food came out fast. The only downfall is if you sit outside, you cannot have a conversation with the person next to you due to the close proximity to Ala Moana Blvd. It was incredibly loud. Other than that, fantastic experience. I would definitely go back but would make sure to sit inside 👍🏼

Nice place for happy hour and gathering with small or large group as the restaurant has some nice long tables as well as booths. Good selection of cocktails and wine. Food is tasty and nice portions. Server was great in checking in before close of happy hour. Good location in the Ward Kaka’ako area. Plenty of parking.

- I used to like this restaurant. They added a cigar menu and allowed cigar and cigarette smoking at outdoor tables. But the restaurant door remains open during business hours. So we could smell the cigar and cigarette smoke all the way in the back of the restaurant where we were seated. After we finished the meal, my clothes also smelled like cigarette smoke. This is like a restaurant with a smoking and a non-smoking sections, but the non-smoking session can still smell all the smoke. For this reason, I don't think the restaurant is for non-smokers or folks who don't like to smell the cigarette smoke while they are dining. + Food is good. Asian fusion. + Service is attentive. + Ambience is good. Trendy with a lounge feel. + Prices are comparable to other similar modern restaurants. Our bill for dinner came to $90 per person including tips. Our order included one alcoholic drink only, 2 non-alcoholic drinks, 7 dishes to share family style, and 1 chocolate fireball dessert to share, for a party of 4 adults.

The Happy Hour at this restaurant is amazing, offering a variety of delicious food options. Happy Hour ends at 6pm. I highly recommend trying the fries and pork belly buns, which were both excellent. The ceviche was good, and the glass noodle shrimp was also good. However, the jidori chicken was excellent, and the crab cakes were great. The Happy Hour menu offers excellent value, and I highly recommend taking advantage of it.

The best Vietnamese cuisine I’ve ever had! This restaurant is top-notch, featuring lovely romantic decor, great vibes, and an inviting atmosphere. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the ambiance and know you’ve made the right choice to dine there. The dining table setup is very private, offering plenty of personal space. The food and drinks are absolutely amazing. We ordered appetizers to share, and they were both plentiful and delicious. Most of the menu items are designed for sharing. I ordered the local snapper fish, fried to perfection, and it was absolutely delicious. Our server made a few recommendations, and we went with his suggestions—everything arrived on time and was perfect. He was super friendly, gave us plenty of time to decide, and let us enjoy our meal without rushing. After dinner, we relaxed, ordered cocktails, and took pictures. It’s a great restaurant with an amazing, friendly staff. Highly recommended!

There's not much to dislike with this restaurant. The location is nice on a (busy) street with outdoor seating. The ambiance the restaurant was very soothing and beautiful. The service was on point, they were never late with drinks or food. Pricing was okay but I would suggest taking at the menu. It's a fusion blend of different cultures. The food was very high quality and delicious. The drinks were a little bit small and pricey but that's a minor complaint. They have a beautiful upstairs but they don't utilize it. It looks like there's a room that can be rented out with its own separate bar (see pictures). My only one complaint, and it's a minor one, is that the bathrooms were extremely dirty.

1938 was a good experience all around, we started at the bar while we waited for our friends to join us. We had a fabulous ginger whiskey drink made with homemade ingredients and it was good. Once our friends arrived we moved to our reserved table. The atmosphere is fantastic, love the decor!! We ordered just a bunch of different plates and everyone pretty much shared. Again can't complain about anything we ordered, really the only compliant and this is with everything is that the plates are getting smaller and the prices are getting higher but not limited to just one place of course. Everything had good flavor and was cooked well and to order. All said and done it was a good meal and good experience we would definitely go back.
