Sweet As (62-620 Kamehameha Hwy)
About
Cool Down with North Shore Classics
Walking through the heart of historic Haleiwa, you can spot the colorful storefront of Sweet As. It is the kind of place that turns a hot afternoon into a reason to pause. Far from the polished, air-conditioned parlors of Honolulu, this spot captures the breezy, casual spirit of Hawaii’s North Shore. The scent of waffle cones being pressed on the spot hits you before you even cross the threshold, mingling with the salt-air breeze coming off the nearby surf breaks.
Scoops and Shave Ice Done Right
This is where locals and surfers grab a quick sugar fix between waves. The menu leans heavily into island-inspired flavors, with creamy, dense ice cream that holds up well against the tropical heat. If you are looking for that quintessential North Shore treat, the shave ice here is finely textured rather than crunchy, acting as the perfect canvas for their house-made syrups. Keep an eye out for the lilikoi and guava toppings—they bring a tart brightness that balances the sweetness of the cream.
The Haleiwa Vibe
Expect a relaxed, outdoor-centric setup. Seating is sparse and often communal, so do not be surprised if you end up sharing a wooden bench with a group of sun-bleached surfers or families exploring Kamehameha Highway. The parking lot can get tight during peak tourist hours, and the line moves at its own island pace, but that is part of the charm. It is loud, it is bright, and it is unapologetically authentic to the town's laid-back surf culture. Whether you are grabbing a quick scoop after a day at Waimea Bay or just strolling through the galleries, Sweet As provides the essential, no-frills fuel for any North Shore excursion.

I was at first confused as to what the name sweet as could possibly mean or infer. As soon as I walked in that door I quickly realized why the store was named this way. I was graced by the presence of Matthew, the best employee any business could ever ask for. This guy was “Sweet As” can be! Great service, great recommendations, great vibe, great aura, great fit on even, this kid had it all. After I ordered, Matthew managed to stay engaged in a lighthearted conversation, making our group feel welcomed in a new environment. His multitasking skills were impressive as he made our sweet treats and held up a great chat. After our ice creams were made, my life changed as I had never tasted something so wonderful in my entirety of living. I’m fully convinced only Matthew could have made such a delectable treat. I rarely ever leave a review but as I’m astounded by the service I was graced with, I feel it necessary to let the world know. My only critique of this place is that they don’t have Matthew’s schedule posted on the wall so I can know when I need to come back. Genius, talented, charisma, kids one of a kind. This kid needs a raise!

Ice cream here tastes like extra thick soft serve, and the flavor with the vanilla base was like vanilla with a hint of fruit, not too sweet. Delicious, I've never had anything like it. Seems like the flies like it too since the store attracts a lot of them. You get a good amount of ice cream, but the price is a little high.

Sweet As Ice Cream brings the style of natural fruit ice cream commonly found in New Zealand to Oahu, and it does so with impressive authenticity. The ice cream highlights real fruit flavors blended fresh with a creamy base, resulting in a texture that feels clean and refreshing rather than heavy or artificial. Each scoop tastes vibrant and fruit-forward, making it especially satisfying in Hawaii’s warm climate. It’s a great spot for anyone looking for a simple, high-quality dessert that focuses on natural ingredients and honest flavor.
