A North Shore Staple Since 1995

When you find yourself cruising through the historic surf town of Haleiwa, the scent of sizzling carne asada pulling you toward the corner of the town square is unmistakable. Cholos Homestyle Mexican Restaurant has served as a reliable refuel station for surfers and travelers for decades. The kitchen focuses on recipes that emphasize slow-cooked meats and fresh, local ingredients, leaning into a laid-back, open-air aesthetic that captures the authentic spirit of Oahu's North Shore.

The Flavors of Haleiwa

The menu is anchored by their famous fish tacos, which rely on the daily catch from local waters. The grilled mahimahi, tucked into warm corn tortillas and topped with a bright, tangy salsa, provides a perfect balance of salt and acidity after a day in the sun. Don't overlook the carnitas; the pork is braised until it reaches a perfect state of tenderness, offering a savory richness that holds its own against the house-made hot sauces. If you have room, the burritos are substantial enough to sustain even the most active beachgoers.

The Atmosphere

Stepping into this local favorite, expect a casual, high-energy environment. It is an unpretentious space where sand-dusted boardshorts are the norm. Be aware that the popularity of this spot means the dining area can get quite lively, and during peak lunch hours, the wait for a table can stretch out onto the sidewalk. Parking in the surrounding Haleiwa shopping strips can be a bit of a puzzle, so keep your patience handy. It is the kind of place that thrives on noise, clinking plates, and the hum of conversation, making it an ideal pitstop for anyone looking to eat well without the formality of a traditional sit-down dinner. Whether you are grabbing a quick meal before heading back to Waimea Bay or winding down with a cold drink, it hits the mark for genuine, no-frills coastal Mexican cuisine.

When my homie and I heard Kam Schools may essentially cause a mass exodus of the mall they reside in after the year we decided to finally see if this place lived up to the hype of seeing everyone there and the commercials over the decades growing up. We liked how intimate and OG the place felt and the service was relatively quick minus drinks which took forever and didn't get refilled as fast as we'd like given the crowd on the inside but that could be due to a crowd we didn't see outside so maybe they were just packed. Where we do fault is the food for the price. Outside of the rice which while dry tasted good the rest of the food fell vastly short. For starters a majority of our food between the carne asada special and my chimichanga was beans which had no taste and was too rich for a legit beans which I guess we'd be less harsh on. The meat was aight on our nachos and cheese coverage was solid but I didn't understand the ground beef inclusion as good as it was I thought it didn't make sense. The standard plates and salsa was aight for $5 but the salsa left lot to be desired. Overall for roughly $24.50 price per plate we got we both were left wanting more. More than happy to support local but this is one I'd happily miss. Definitely talked a game it couldn't back up...

Cholo’s has been around for a long time, so it was nice coming back home and seeing it’s still here. We chose to sit outside because it was a nice day. I guess I didn’t realize my son would be side eyeing all the wildlife running around. There was another waiter, a guy that saw how uncomfortable my son was and he gave him a water gun to spray the chickens that kept coming under the table and that made my son so incredibly happy!! Not only that he give him a water gun , but he took time out of his busy job to have a conversation with my son Kawika to make him feel more at ease. So a huge shout out to him bc our waitress didn’t pick up on that at all. The food has the consistent quality that it has had over the years. The rice and beans were excellent and re-heated well without making your stomach upset. The taco salad was cooked excellent. Our waitress wasn’t the greatest, but she did do her job of taking our order, bringing the food, drinks and check, but not engaging or very Aloha with us. The big part that people should know before they choose to eat here is that they do charge extra money to use a credit card vs paying in cash. So just so you are pre warned.

Food was very good and tasted genuinely homemade and fresh, not processed or rushed. Everything we tried was well-seasoned and satisfying, and each bite felt like an explosion of flavor in my mouth without being over the top. You can tell they care about what they’re serving, which is always appreciated. The staff was a big highlight. Even during a busy lunch rush, everyone stayed friendly, hardworking, and respectful. Service didn’t feel irritated or rushed, which says a lot when a place is clearly slammed. They handled the crowd well and kept things moving smoothly. The atmosphere is something to be aware of before going. It’s very loud and chaotic, especially when busy. Lots of noise, movement, and energy all at once it can feel like a symphony of emotions depending on your tolerance for crowds. If you’re looking for a quiet or relaxed meal, this probably isn’t the best spot. If you enjoy lively, high energy environments, you’ll fit right in. Overall, it was a very good experience. Great food, solid service, and a high energy atmosphere. I’d definitely come back, just knowing what kind of vibe to expect next time.
