Malai Thai
About
A North Shore Spice Escape
When the trade winds pick up along the North Shore, locals often duck into Malai Thai to warm up with the bold, aromatic punch of traditional Southeast Asian spices. This Haleiwa staple has become a reliable haunt for surfers and families alike looking for a break from the standard plate lunch fare. You will smell the sharp, refreshing scent of lemongrass and galangal the moment you step through the door, cutting through the salty coastal air.
The Flavor Profile
The kitchen leans into the classics that have made Thai cuisine a global favorite. The Green Curry stands out here; it arrives bubbling with a vibrant, spicy coconut milk base that balances heat with the sweetness of basil and bamboo shoots. Their Pad Thai maintains the perfect chew on the noodles, tossed with a tamarind sauce that carries just the right amount of tang. Portions are generous, making it an ideal post-surf meal when you need to refuel without pretense.
The Haleiwa Character
Dining here is a casual affair that matches the relaxed pulse of town. It is not about white tablecloths or formal service; it is about getting a piping hot bowl of Tom Yum soup in a space that feels like a neighborhood living room. Be prepared for a bit of a scramble if you are visiting during the peak lunch rush, as parking in this pocket of the North Shore can be a tight game of musical chairs. If you grab a table near the back, you might hear the rhythmic clatter of the wok station and the lively chatter of regulars, creating an authentic, unvarnished dining environment that feels distinctly Hawaiian-Thai.

Located in a small area of historic Hale’Iwa that houses many small shacks/food trucks. Good portions for price and worth the wait, food was piping hot when it was done and flavors were very traditional - loved the Thai basil ! Could use more modern menu to match the quality of the food. Parking can be tricky due to larger vehicles but easy enough during my visit.

I had a wonderful experience with Malai Thai. I had the garlic pepper shrimp. Very generous portions for the pricing. We also got an order of the basil fried rice with chicken which also was fantastic. Got multiple meals for the two of us from these two orders. Some of the best Thai food I’ve had since being in Thailand. Very fresh tasting and they cook it all fresh. They give you a little buzzer so if your group is at a different truck you can sit and wait for your food there. Definitely check them out after a long day on the beach!

What a fantastic little food truck! This is back inside a little food truck collective and everything was freshly made to order. There is a nice big parking lot for the collective which is nice in Haleiwa! We had tom yum which was filled with fresh ginger, lemongrass, mushrooms and was so refreshing after a day on the beach. We ordered it no spice for the kids and the flavor was full well balanced between salty and sour and a hint of sweetness. We also had the fried cashew chicken which our kids LOVED. We also had mango sticky rice, which was a huge serving of rice soaked in coconut milk. It was so delicious and everyone loved it.
