A North Shore Ritual

Before hitting the surf breaks at Waimea Bay or sunset watching at Banzai Pipeline, locals and travelers alike make a mandatory stop at this Haleiwa institution. This isn't your average supermarket run; it serves as the unofficial refueling station for the North Shore community. The air here carries the faint, salty breeze of the Pacific mixed with the distinct, savory scent of seasoned soy sauce and toasted sesame oil wafting from the deli counter.

The Legendary Poke Counter

The main attraction is undoubtedly the poke bar. You will find an array of options ranging from spicy ahi with creamy mayo to fresh limu kohu. It is common to see a line forming near the back of the store, where locals grab a pound of fish and a side of white rice before heading toward the beach. If you catch the lunch rush, expect a bit of a shuffle as everyone maneuvers through the aisles, but the efficiency of the counter staff keeps things moving.

Practical Details for the Island Traveler

Positioned right along the main Kamehameha Highway, this spot is ideal for picking up picnic supplies, cold drinks, or a quick, affordable meal when you are on the move. While the parking lot can get remarkably tight during weekend peaks as surf enthusiasts load up their gear, the accessibility makes it worth the minor squeeze. Whether you are a resident looking for a convenient dinner shortcut or a visitor wanting an authentic taste of Hawaii, the grab-and-go selection here captures the uncomplicated, flavor-focused spirit of the island lifestyle.

Foodland Pupukea is a convenient and well-organized store with a great variety of products. Their Poke is delicious, made with very fresh tuna, and the price is quite reasonable compared to other places in Hawaii. It’s a very easy and reliable spot to pick up a fresh meal or groceries while on the North Shore.

Grocery prices are ridiculously higher than other stores in the area but the poke is delicious and super cheap especially if you go late.

I will begin by saying this is a poke specific review. Walking up to the Foodland counter as a first timer is a daunting experience. You witness a few of those “in the know” customers place an order effortlessly and concisely, while you experience decision paralysis gazing at perhaps 12 different poke options. As the family member with the most poke experience I was chosen to order first. I was pushed up to the register in the manner a middle school boy is pushed by his friends toward his crush. To my great relief the man working the counter was forgiving, kind, one might even say gregarious. Despite the line of customers he took special care to guide me through the different flavors of poke. He did the same with the rest of my family. If I’m being honest I have no idea what I got. I got two kinds of fresh ahi tuna and it was fantastic. I felt strong, healthy, and powerful. Like a seal. We ended up eating here a handful of times over the course of our vacation. Also, the spam musabi was fantastic. Why the rare 5 stars? You may ask. I give a 5 star review when I am wowed by an establishment. Was the poke the best food I’ve ever eaten? No. But was I wowed by the fact that you could get very good poke in a grocery store? For a reasonable price? With great customer service? Yes. I would eat here again.

People come here for the poke and other prepared foods. You should too! Skip the mediocre food trucks/stalls next door and go here for fresher, more local options for a much better price. Also great for other grocery needs if you’re staying long term in the area. Not many grocery stores have an oceanfront view!

In a very remote area of the island it is crucial for being able to get ur poke wit da kine flavors from foodland's extensive array. Stay kanaking bra! So ono cuz! If u just thought that it's possible u have been on the rock for too long, nah nah just right. I apologize In advance for this review. But one additional thing they have extra shave ice syrup flavors the other locations don't carry. Sold as far as I'm concerned. Awright! After trying da kine grindz here it's possible that u will develop the self diagnosed medical condition of broke da mout'! This can accompany kanak attack but not always. If u find urself napping u may have suffered from said kanak attack. Immediate medical attention is optional. Aloha!

Foodland usually has really good poke, but this location had terrible customer service. The guy serving poke completely ignored me — I had to try multiple times to get his attention, and when he finally responded, he was rude. The staff seemed more focused on chatting with each other than helping customers. I don’t mind people talking at work, but when it interferes with service, it’s unacceptable. On top of that, he didn’t even fill my bowl properly compared to how I usually get it. The poke itself was still amazing, but the experience definitely wasn’t.

Whilst on vacation in North Shore popped in here to grab some quick items. Not overly priced. Cute Hawaiian-made things as well. Along with fresh produce and nice reusable-bags for sale. There’s also a coffee shop nearby if you’re waiting for them to open at 6 AM like I was today. Rock on.
