9th Island Vegan
About
A Taste of the Islands, Plant-Style
Tucked away on the North Shore, 9th Island Vegan brings a refreshing perspective to Haleiwa’s dining scene. This is where local island culture meets plant-based innovation. The menu is a direct nod to Hawaiian-local comfort food, reimagined without animal products, making it a standout choice for those looking to fuel up after a morning session in the surf.
What’s Cooking in Haleiwa
The kitchen leans heavily into bold, tropical flavors. You will find hearty plate lunches that mirror traditional staples, often featuring house-made meat substitutes that actually hold their own. Expect heavy-hitting textures and sauces that balance the sweetness of local fruits with savory, umami-rich seasonings. The smell of ginger, shoyu, and garlic usually wafts out to the sidewalk as soon as they open the window.
The North Shore Experience
Expect a low-key, walk-up experience rather than a formal sit-down affair. It is perfect for grabbing a quick, wholesome bite before heading toward Waimea Bay or Pipe. Keep in mind that seating is limited and the local pace is deliberate—you are here to eat well, not to rush. The vibe is decidedly casual, echoing the relaxed nature of the Haleiwa community. Whether you are a full-time vegan or just curious about trying cleaner, island-inspired versions of classic local comfort food, this spot offers a unique flavor profile that is hard to replicate elsewhere on the island.

Located in Haleiwa town, 9th avenue vegan is a creative vegan cafe that surprises even non-vegans with bold flavors and generous portions. Fair enough for their Caesar salad, the jackfruit melt, and also lasagna. This restaurant is proof that vegan food does not mean boring or no taste. The atmosphere is laid back and welcoming with casual indoor seating and a small patio making for a nice lunch stop on the North shore. Free Parking is located off to the side of restaurant.

One of the best vegan restaurants I’ve tried in Hawaii! We ordered three dishes: the Caesar Salad, the Jackfruit Melt, and the Moco Loco👍👍👍 The Caesar Salad was hands down the best I’ve ever had. The romaine was crunchy and fresh, and the sauce was rich and creamy. The jackfruit had an amazing texture, and the bread for the melt was grilled to perfection. The Moco Loco’s gravy was incredibly flavorful and included spinach and mushrooms. Even my non-vegan friend said it was her favorite loco moco she’s tried in Hawaii. We loved the service just as much as we loved the food

My friend and I had a fantastic lunch here while driving along the north shore. It’s so amazing to find nutritious food while you travel. I have to eat gluten free, and there were 3 or 4 items marked on the menu as being available gluten free (and I suspect more that could have been modified to be gf); I got the sweet potato breakfast wrap. It was worth the 12 hour flight to Hawaii just for this wrap!!! So tasty. It came in a brown rice wrap which looked so similar to flour; the owner was very reassuring that she knows them by size and won’t get them mixed up. My friend got the fried pickle poppers and also loved her dish. The owner was so lovely to talk to! Highly recommend visiting.
