A Waipahu Culinary Landmark

Stepping into Tanioka's Seafood and Catering feels less like visiting a restaurant and more like walking into a family kitchen that happens to be the epicenter of local Hawaiian comfort food. Located in the heart of Waipahu, this legendary spot has been a staple for islanders since 1978. The aroma of freshly seasoned poke, spicy ahi, and crispy fried chicken hits you the moment you pull into the bustling parking lot—a lot that tests your patience, but always proves worth the wait.

Poke Worth the Line

The display cases here are legendary, packed with mountains of ahi poke that set the gold standard for the region. Whether you prefer the classic shoyu style or their bolder, peppered varieties, the freshness is unmistakable. It’s common to see a queue snaking toward the door, especially during lunch hour, as locals grab bentos and musubi before heading to the beach or back to the office. The sound of rapid-fire orders and the clatter of takeout containers creates an authentic, high-energy atmosphere that defines the Waipahu experience.

More Than Just Seafood

While the seafood gets the spotlight, the hot food menu is equally impressive. The fried chicken is celebrated for its perfect crunch, and the catering side of the operation remains a go-to for island celebrations. Be mindful that this is a grab-and-go heavy environment; seating is limited, so most patrons take their treasures to nearby parks or back home to enjoy the meal. If you are looking for an unpretentious, high-quality bite that captures the true essence of Oahu’s local food scene, this neighborhood institution is an essential stop.

Bit pricey, but that's because Oahu in general is pricey. Honestly, you're paying average prices for better than average quality, so the value is there. Most sodas are 99 cents, any size, which is nice. Obviously, the poke is awesome. You can't really go wrong no matter what you get. I like the bento boxes with half spicy ahi, half tako on a bed of sushi rice. Don't sleep on the hot dishes as they're also excellent. My favorites are the fried butterfish and BBQ pork belly. The line will often go out the door. For me, visiting around opening works best. The parking lot is fairly large and shared with other businesses. I've never had trouble finding a space... though the walking might be farther than it looks. There's a dedicated zone for order pick ups but I've never used it.

If you are looking to eat AUTHENTIC Japanese cuisine, then Tanioka's Seafood and Catering is THE place to go! I have NEVER seen so many varieties of musubi and poke that it was difficult to choose! They also sell a variety of shopping bags in all sizes! Shop early because they close at 2:00 pm, and the line to get in is long, but well worth the wait!

Quite possibly the best poke on the island. If you're going to try just one, let it be this one. Fish is expertly cleaned and cut so that every bite is tender and there are no sinewy bits. The queue builds quite early in the morning with a lot of locals already in line at 10 a.m.; tells you how popular the place is, and for good reason! The ahi pokes are probably the best ones on offer.

Been here a few times and these guys are primarily famous for their poke. However, you shouldn't discount the other things they server. This last time i got their pesto pork and it might be some of the best pork i have ever had. As always will be stopping here often.

Took the combo so got 2 kinds of poke for $25, and got a ton of rice and a relatively small amount of poke. I remember even when she scooped it I thought to myself it was too little, and it was just ok.. Even the spicy which is kinda hard to miss with most places. The staff is kind and people are cool.

I stopped in as a bucket list item since I’d heard so much about Tanioka’s and saw POV Husband from social media went here recently. I got there just after opening on a Thursday and it was a quick visit. The staff is awesome and it helped that I reviewed their menu online and had a list. I would very highly recommend doing this, it’s a small place and having your order in hand before you arrive keeps you moving quickly so you don’t hold up the other customers. The staff are absolute rock stars at working together to put your order together and get you checked out and on your way. I picked up the Volcano Alae Ahi, Spicy Ahi, and Wasabi Miso Tako poke and all were fresh and tasty. I also picked up the corned beef hash patty, shrimp stick, and the regular fried chicken, garlic fried chicken, and the Mochiko chicken. The corned beef has patty is a little pillow of happiness for anyone who likes corned beef hash. The fried chicken were all good but, the Mochiko chicken is just out of this world tasty goodness. I also ordered the shrimp stick with sauce on the side and if you like shrimp tempura this is a must with the lighter sauce poured over it. This was my first time to Tanioka’s so I went a bit overboard to try a range of items but it was such a great experience. This would be a perfect place to stop either on the way back from a morning beach visit or on the way to an early afternoon beach visit with lunch or picnic meet up. Get there early, be patient and drive with aloha on Farrington and in the parking lot. Mind the spaces that are reserved for people who live in the area and other businesses, be patient, and enjoy! Thank you again to the awesome staff for making it such an easy visit!

Tanioka is famous for their poke, and for good reason. The volcano and onion limu poke are both top notch, incredibly fresh and flavorful. But don’t sleep on their plate lunches! I got the pork belly plate and was genuinely taken aback at how good it was. The pork was super tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Everything here hits the spot.

One of the best places to get poke in my opinion. Service was really fast and friendly. It says 9am on Saturday but when I get there at 0845 they already had a line and it was open. The line moves faster than you think and you need to get there early if you want certain things. Only one bad thing, parking sucks if you don’t get there early so just a warning! Would go back anytime!
