About
A Waipahu Tradition on Four Wheels
If you find yourself navigating the busy thoroughfares of Waipahu, the distinct scent of slow-cooked kalua pork drifting through the air is your best signal to pull over. Laverne's Lunch Wagon has become a cornerstone of the local food scene, serving plates that lean into the heart of Hawaiian comfort food without any unnecessary frills.
The Flavor of Local Life
This isn't a place for white tablecloths or reservations; it is about standing on the pavement, plastic fork in hand, digging into a generous helping of their signature kalua pig or savory lau lau. The menu shifts occasionally, but the consistency of the meat—tender enough to fall apart at a touch—remains the primary draw. The flavor profile is deeply rooted in traditional island preparation, providing a smoky, salty richness that defines home-cooked Hawaiian cuisine.
What to Expect
The atmosphere is strictly informal. You will likely be eating out of a styrofoam container while leaning against your car hood or sitting on a nearby curb, which is part of the charm. Because it is a popular spot for local workers during the lunch hour, the line can move quickly, but expect a bit of a wait if you arrive right at peak time. Parking in the surrounding Waipahu area can get tight during the midday rush, so scout your spot carefully. It is the perfect stop for those who value authenticity over ambiance and want a quick, heavy meal that fuels the rest of the day.

I ordered the Beef Stew plate but was given Beef Curry Stew instead! There was 3 pieces of potatoes, 4 pieces of carrots and only 2 pieces of meat! With the rice, mac salad and potatoes there was more starch than anything else in this plate! It didn’t satisfy my craving for dinner tonight! I went here because of the good reviews they had but was disappointed!

Delicious traditional Hawaiian food, we had the chopped steak with toss salad and rice and it was mouthwatering. Ordering was a bit challenging to understand but the man was super helpful.

Stumbled upon the food trucks when we were in the area. Decided to try this one out, which turned out to be good. The special was a steak dish and also had the pork/chicken combo. Everything was pretty good, however the menu song doesn’t let you know everything you are getting. I didn’t know the chicken was with noodles, the special didn’t specify the sides, etc. In any event, enjoyed it all (even though the Mac salad is like 45% mayo) Would definitely get the kalua pork and absolutely would get the steak special again. It was my favourite.
