About
A Waipahu Staple for Local Comfort Food
Stepping up to the counter at this Leoku Street landmark feels like a rite of passage for anyone craving authentic Island-style soul food. Known for anchoring the Waipahu community, this spot carries the legacy of the original Kapahulu location, serving up those iconic plate lunches that define Hawaii’s culinary culture.
The Legendary Mix Plate Experience
The menu is built for hunger. Most locals steer straight for the Mixed Plate, a generous helping of breaded beef, boneless chicken, and a fried fish fillet. You’ll hear the sizzle of the grill and the rhythmic clatter of plastic trays being passed through the window as the staff navigates the lunch rush. Don't skip the signature gravy—it’s poured generously over two scoops of steamed white rice and a heap of macaroni salad, creating that perfect, humble comfort meal.
Why Locals Keep Coming Back
This Waipahu kitchen is built for utility rather than luxury. It’s loud, it’s fast, and the seating is strictly functional, often spilling out into the parking lot where you’ll catch the scent of grilled meats mingling with the humid West Oahu air. While parking can get tight during the peak noon hour, the efficiency of the kitchen keeps the line moving quickly. Whether you are grabbing a quick chili rice bowl or settling in for a full chili dog plate, this is where you go when you want food that tastes like home. It is an unpretentious slice of history that remains a go-to for shift workers, students, and families throughout the city.

The Loco moco was delicious and fresh. This location was a little cheaper than the one in Waikiki. Will definitely be back.

We were so happy to find that the Rainbow Drive-In has other locations now, and with the same "Ono grindz". While it may not have the "charms" of the Honolulu's location like the t-shirt souvenirs and limited parking... The Waipahu location sure is fast, clean and convenient. I got the corned beef hash plate lunch (with gravy naturally) and like I said, same great tasting food. I included the QR for the menu so you can check what you may be missing ;D \000/

Well this makes the second time I've been to Rainbows. It's been maybe a decade since the first time and I wasn't really impressed that first time. Anyway I was going to the post office and saw the sign and thought...hey why not? First off this mini strip mall has been renovated and looks way nicer than before. The parking lot has a good amount of parking stalls and the lot itself has been repaved so it's nice and new as well. Rainbows itself is brand new and looks nice and clean. A little sad since all the tables and drink fountain are closed currently. I went with a loco moco plate and price was a little over $10 after tax. This gets you a plate of rice, big scoop of Mac salad, two eggs, two hamburgers and gravy. The rice was cooked well and not dry or mushy...something that seems to happen more often nowadays. The eggs were cooked to order and the Mac salad was nice and cold and actually tasted pretty good. The gravy was pretty good and better than your average plate lunch place. Unfortunately while the burgers had decent flavor they were both pretty thin. I think one thicker patty would do much better. Overall not bad but nothing amazing either. I'll try their mix plate next time.
