Kunia Chinese Restaurant
About
Cantonese Comfort in the Heart of Waipahu
Tucked away in the busy Kunia Shopping Center, this local favorite serves as a reliable anchor for those craving traditional Cantonese flavors. The kitchen specializes in authentic, no-frills Chinese comfort food that resonates with the local Waipahu community. When you walk through the doors, you are immediately greeted by the familiar, savory aroma of sizzling hot oil and ginger emanating from the wok station, set against a backdrop of steady clatter and bustling lunchtime energy.
Signature Flavors and Local Staples
The menu is extensive, focusing on time-honored dishes that keep regulars returning. Their salt and pepper pork chops are a standout, offering a satisfying crunch followed by a tender, seasoned interior. Fans of classic Hong Kong-style cuisine often gravitate toward their roast duck and succulent char siu, which are prepared with traditional roasting techniques that produce a deep, caramelized finish. For those dining in large groups, the generous portion sizes of their family-style platters make this an easy go-to for casual gatherings.
What to Expect
Kunia Chinese Restaurant keeps things straightforward. It isn’t about white-tablecloth service; it’s about hot, fresh food served in a communal, relaxed environment. While the parking lot in this shopping complex can get exceptionally tight during peak dinner hours, the trade-off is consistent, wallet-friendly Chinese cuisine that hits the mark when you need a hearty meal. It is an ideal spot for office workers grabbing a quick plate lunch or families looking for an uncomplicated dinner that feels like home cooking. Keep in mind that the acoustics can get a bit loud when the room is full, adding to the high-energy, authentic canteen atmosphere of this West Oahu dining institution.

Just ate here with my nieces and had a really disappointing experience. We were the first ones seated, and at the time there were only two tables occupied. Shortly after, the restaurant filled up, which I understand can make things busy. However, our food came out one dish at a time, about 20 minutes apart. It was frustrating watching other larger parties get their meals while we were still waiting. The beef and broccoli was poorly prepared — the broccoli wasn’t properly chopped and came out in huge pieces, some as big as three of my fingers. The roast pork was burnt, and we never received our white buns. When we decided to cancel the white buns because we had already finished eating, the older server was extremely rude. She told us to “just take them home for leftovers” and said they were busy. That response felt dismissive and unprofessional. Overall, the service was unacceptable. I expect meals to come out together and basic courtesy from staff. Very disappointing experience.

It's a kinda run down in the way you expect a Hawaii Chinese restaurant should look. What really shines here is the food. Pretty much everything I've ever eaten there in my MANY visits and take out nights stops to this establishment have been delicious. House Fried Rice is a must. Chinese Sizzling Beef Platter is divine.
