About
A Taste of Kauai in the Heart of Waipahu
Stepping into Garden Island Cafe feels like discovering a quiet corner of the islands tucked away from the main highway. This local institution has spent years serving up classic Hawaiian comfort food that prioritizes flavor over flash. You’ll hear the sizzle of the griddle long before you reach the counter, and the scent of slow-cooked kalua pork greets you immediately upon entering.
Known primarily for their signature saimin and hearty plate lunches, this spot attracts a steady crowd of Waipahu residents and hungry workers looking for a no-frills meal. The kitchen doesn't waste time on elaborate plating; instead, they focus on consistent, generous portions that hit the spot during a long afternoon. If you’re a fan of local-style chow fun or tender oxtail soup, this is your place.
While the atmosphere is utilitarian and the seating area can get quite packed during the lunch rush, that’s exactly where the charm lies. It’s a bustling, honest eatery where the chatter of regulars dominates the room. Be prepared for a challenge if you’re trying to navigate the parking lot during peak hours, but once you snag a table and dive into a bowl of their steaming soup, the initial hustle feels like a small price to pay. It’s the perfect spot for anyone wanting to eat like a true local without the tourist-heavy price tags found in Waikiki.

Great customer service, friendly atmosphere, owner was great. Food portion was amazing. Highly recommend Garden Island Cafe over many other Chinese Restaurants in Waipahu. Especially Jade Garden…Jade’s Customer Service is nonexistent and they don’t like their customers. Will definitely be back and refer others to Garden. Did I mention crazy food portions? My box didn’t even close. Multiple meals in one and phenomenal price/value. Happy and Grateful I found this place. Farther from home but definitely worth the extra hike. 😎

I ordered sweet and sour pork plate for $11.25 and "WOW" the quantity was a lot. It felt like it was over 2 pounds. Two scoops of rice and macaroni salad and loads of sweet and sour pork, which I could not finish so I brought home the leftover for my dinner. The food is great and the service is great. This is a great cheapeats spot.

If you're looking for salt n pepper chicken this is not it, it's more of a garlic chicken. Their fried chicken was great. Their gau gee and crab Rangoon was tasty and stuffed, great quantity. Fried rice was good. Walnut shrimp wasn't the greatest to me but my husband enjoyed it. Sweet n sour spareribs had some dry ribs so hard to chew but the taste of the sauce was good. Their Mac salad was tasty. The star was definitely their crispy fried chicken and fried rice for me.
