Sensei by Nobu
About
Culinary Precision in the Lanai Highlands
High above the coastline in Lanai City, Sensei by Nobu offers a departure from typical island fare. The restaurant serves as the gastronomic centerpiece of the Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort, focusing on a nutritional philosophy that bridges the gap between wellness and indulgence. Here, Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s signature style is adapted to highlight local bounty, emphasizing fresh, clean ingredients that feel light yet complex.
The Sensory Experience
Stepping into the dining room feels like entering a glass-encased garden. Large floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto the lush greenery of the upcountry landscape, allowing the soft, diffuse light of the Lanai mist to set the mood. You might hear the faint hum of a sophisticated, quiet room—the acoustics are intentional, allowing for hushed conversations even as the staff moves with near-silent precision. The scent of fresh ginger and citrus often wafts from the open prep areas, mingling with the earthy aroma of the surrounding pine forests.
Refined Flavors
The menu leans heavily into the Nobu lineage but with a specific focus on the 'Sensei' philosophy: anti-inflammatory ingredients, locally sourced greens from the resort's own hydroponic farm, and pristine island-caught seafood. You shouldn't miss the signature black cod with miso, which retains that classic buttery, sweet-savory profile, served alongside vibrant vegetable preparations that define the Lanai experience. While the service is impeccable, guests should prepare for the winding, steep drive up the mountainside to reach this remote destination—it is a commitment to the journey, but one that yields a distinct sense of seclusion.
It is an ideal destination for travelers looking to balance a day of hiking or spa treatments with a meal that feels deliberate and restorative. Just be mindful that the pace here is slower than your typical bustling urban restaurant; it invites a lingering approach to dinner, perfectly suited to the quietude of Lanai City.

Outstanding, unique, and healthy food. The yellow curry, leek salad, and Okinawa suite potatoes blew my mind. This is an incredible dining option.

We have been here many many times. It's ok but when you are on lanai, there are not many options. The mushroom soup was fine, nothing to write home about. The miso cod was good but cold, would have been better warm. The burger was hammered (way over cooked!). I wish they had more options here. The filet was great!

Gorgeous restaurant with extensive varied menu. Portions and options are on the light side, and veggie centric. The home grown blistered cherry tomatoes are exceptional. Breakfast is five star although look at the ingredients closely to see if the typical ingredients are vegan. The bagel with salmon didn’t have cream cheese, it may have been vegan.

Food was great but the older Asian lady that waited on us was very judge mental and perhaps homophobic. I didn’t eat the bland lettuce from my salad and she totally tried calling me out for it. She did not have a welcoming feel and we almost skipped our second reservation there. I paid for their expensive food, I can eat what I want of it. Again, the food was excellent-I got two orders of white fish. Lastly, if you don’t order the multi course meal you are also judged. I think that woman needs to hang up her apron and retire. The young blonde chick the second time was very nice, however she did bring us the wrong dish & we just ate it.

Wonderfully delicious. The black cod was succulent and flavorful. Lamb chops tender, moist, and nicely done.

What a beautiful place to have an amazing meal. I especially like the fish! A special thanks to Jeff for going above and beyond and the whole kitchen staff for making our anniversary an extra special occasion. If my wife survives another year we will be back to enjoy the soothing ambiance, delicious menu and interesting artwork.
