Roy's - Kaanapali

We have been going to Roy’s for many years and nostalgically celebrated a birthday there last week. I was disappointed by many aspects of our visit. Everything was just ok but the prices would seem to warrant excellent everything. The two bright spots were the edamame that was complimentary for the table and the portion sizes were good. The service was super slow. The soufflé that I love was not as good as I remembered and my fish tasted a little fishier than I like.

I had high expectations for Roy’s Maui, especially for a birthday dinner—but it was a complete disappointment. The atmosphere felt very mediocre and far from the upscale experience you’d expect for the prices. It had more of a basic golf resort vibe than anything special. We started with the ravioli appetizer ($25), and it was served raw—completely unacceptable. I also asked for something simple—bread and butter—and the server was very rude and dismissive, saying, “No, we don’t have that. I gave you edamame beans.” That kind of attitude set the tone for the rest of the night. Our entrees took about 60 minutes to arrive, and the restaurant wasn’t even busy. When the food finally came out, it was cold, like it had been sitting on the counter. The shrimp was gummy, the rice was mushy, and the overall quality did not match the $50 price point. For a place that’s so talked about on Maui, this was shocking. When you’re on the island and options can feel limited—especially around resorts—you expect better. We spent $175 for a birthday dinner that felt like a waste. I would not return or recommend this place.

Thoroughly enjoyed my meal - the butterfish. I ordered it because I've never seen it on a menu before and was curious what it was all about. Well, it was one of the best fish dishes I've ever had. My wife had a swordfish that was also quite good, but not comparable to the butterfish. We both had tiger shrimp, which were quite fantastic. I usually dont care much for larger-sized shrimp, for whatever reason, but these were fantastic. To top it off, our waitress and everyone else we interacted with was exceptionally friendly and had a flourish about them when it came to presenting the food. I personally thought it was all worth the price, and would certainly recommend.

We ate at Roy’s Kaanapali while visiting Maui and had a really great experience overall. The butterfish was the standout—honestly one of the best fish dishes I’ve had. It was rich, super tender, and just packed with flavor. My dad kept bringing it up the rest of the night. We also ordered the pork ribs and seared ahi to start, and both were really good. The ribs had a ton of flavor and the ahi was nicely balanced with a little kick. Dessert was the chocolate soufflé, and yeah—it’s worth it. Definitely lives up to the reputation. The atmosphere feels a little more upscale, but not in a way that’s uncomfortable. You can still relax and enjoy yourself. The view over the golf course is nice, even if it’s not a beachfront spot. It’s not cheap, but for a nicer dinner on vacation, it felt worth it.

Have been coming to Maui for years and have never tried this spot thinking it was another chain…. My only regret is I haven’t been here before! Food was outstanding and service was over the top. My wife ordered the filet and the server went above and beyond and spit it with my son. I had the Cioppino which was amazing. Preordered the soufflé that ending the meal perfectly. Can’t wait to go back!

Roy’s is set on the Ka’anapali golf course. The inside of the restaurant leaves a little to be desired. It’s very basic. Some of the other reviews state it being bright and louder, which I would say is accurate. Feels like a slightly upscale clubhouse restaurant. That being said, everyone that helped us that evening were very nice and accommodating. They made you feel like you were in a fancy restaurant. Our server, Christina, was fantastic. The food, including the appetizers and main course, were delicious. Our table enjoyed the calamari, bao buns and beet salad to start. Then we had the butterfish, macadamia crusted catch, which was Mahi, tiger shrimp, ribeye and fish/shrimp duo. We all enjoyed our meals. As with any of the other “elevated” restaurants on the island, you will want to make a reservation.

We had lunch here this week, and based on the many positive reviews we had heard, we arrived with high expectations and were looking forward to an enjoyable dining experience. The ambiance was wonderful, with a pleasant view overlooking the golf course, and the service was excellent. Our servers were attentive, friendly, and helpful throughout our visit. I ordered the stir-fried tofu with vegetables and rice. While the presentation of the dish was very appealing, I unfortunately found it to be overly salty, which made it difficult to fully enjoy the meal. It left me wondering whether the seasoning had been adjusted or tasted prior to being served. Overall, while the setting and service were strong positives, the food did not meet our expectations, especially considering the price point. For this reason, it is unlikely that we will return, though we do appreciate the professionalism of the staff and the pleasant atmosphere.

Stopped in without a reservation and were greeted by a courteous hostess. We sat at the bar, and the kitchen was accommodating with a special request for my husband, which was appreciated. He had the mahi mahi, and I ordered the Blackened Island Ahi—both were well executed and flavorful. The Brussels sprouts and beet salad were also very good. Overall, the food was consistently solid and the experience relaxed and professional. A reliable choice in Kaanapali, and we would return

Food, ambience, and service were all a solid four out of five. We started with the Brussels sprouts and Szechuan ribs—both were very good and much larger portions than expected. Would definitely order both again. For mains, we had the butterfish and the grilled catch of the day with shrimp. The butterfish was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, though the overall presentation was more of a four than a five. The grilled catch was fine, but not especially memorable. The chocolate ganache cake was excellent, though we were disappointed that decaf espresso wasn’t available. We’d return, but next time would likely sit at the bar for drinks and appetizers.

Just what you'd expect of the legendary Ray's. We've been to Poipu Grill and several on the mainland as well, and this location did not disappoint. We asked the server for a recommendation which he provided, but when we said, "we are thinking about the cioppino," he immediately responded, "get the cioppino."
