Island Flavors at the Historic Waterfront

Stepping into Papaʻaina, you are immediately greeted by the salty breeze off Lahaina Harbor and the creak of floorboards that have stood since the turn of the 20th century. This isn’t just a dining room; it is a direct line to Maui’s plantation-era past. Located inside the iconic, white-washed Pioneer Inn, the space balances history with a bright, airy aesthetic that makes it a favorite for those wanting a quintessential West Maui morning.

Farm-to-Table Roots

Chef Lee Anne Wong helms the kitchen with a philosophy rooted firmly in the land. The menu highlights local agriculture, sourcing ingredients from island farmers to create plates that feel both refined and rustic. If you find yourself here for breakfast or brunch, the signature Loco Moco—elevated with house-made gravy and locally sourced beef—is a mandatory order. The scent of fresh coffee mingles with the aroma of sizzling bacon, creating a comforting, sensory-rich start to your day.

The Local Experience

The atmosphere leans toward relaxed elegance, making it ideal for a slow Sunday brunch or a quiet coffee while watching the boats dock at the adjacent harbor. Be prepared for the authentic, bustling nature of the waterfront; you might hear the distant chatter of whale-watching tour guides or the occasional clinking of masts in the wind. While the seating can feel a bit snug during the weekend rush, the service remains attentive and laid back, fitting the island pace perfectly. Whether you are a long-time resident or just stepping off the ferry, Papaʻaina offers a genuine connection to Lahaina’s food culture without the pretense of a typical tourist trap.

Absolutely LOVE this place! My partner and i have been looking for “our brunch spot” and i think we’ve found it here💛🌱 We don’t even drink but we sit at the bar each time we come. The bartenders are super friendly, helpful, and great guys. Joe, Mitch, and Shane. The food has been phenomenal every time. HIGHLY highly recommend this place to locals and those visiting!

The best Sunday brunch! Chef Lee Anne Wong has completely transformed the pioneer inn. The food is fresh and delicious with an ever changing menu. You can taste the fresh local ingredients! The French toast is next level along with the Ramen. Order a bunch and share with the table.

As a fan of top chef I was very excited to visit Papa’aina while visiting Maui. We visited twice during our trip, once for breakfast and once for dinner. For dinner we had a reservation, but for breakfast we walked in very early. All of the food was very impressive! Everything was super fresh and incredibly flavorful. Each dish had something that surprised us and we absolutely loved it. My personal highlights were both the breakfast dishes, the special omelet and mahi mahi eggs Benedict, the heirloom tomato salad (prepared literally perfectly, I’ll never forget that vinaigrette), and the beignet desert. Oh and the crudo! I cannot wait to visit Maui again so I can eat here ♥️
