Castaway Cafe
About
A Slice of Maui Paradise by the Shore
Perched right where the rugged coastline meets the Pacific, Castaway Cafe offers an quintessential Maui dining experience in the heart of West Maui. This isn't your typical polished resort eatery; it’s an open-air venue where the constant rhythm of crashing waves provides the soundtrack and the salty breeze serves as your primary seasoning. Whether you are shaking off the sand after a day at the nearby Kaanapali beaches or looking for a sunset vantage point, the atmosphere remains laid-back and unpretentious.
Savoring the Island Flavors
The menu leans heavily into local comfort food, with the macadamia nut-crusted catch of the day standing out as a consistent favorite. Guests often rave about the baby back ribs, which arrive glazed in a tangy sauce that complements the warm tropical air. If you visit for breakfast, the banana macadamia nut pancakes are a heavy, sweet start that pairs perfectly with a cup of locally grown Maui coffee.
The Reality of Beachside Comfort
While the panoramic views of Molokai across the channel are breathtaking, be prepared for the reality of island life: this is a popular spot, and during peak hours, you might find yourself navigating a tight parking situation in the surrounding area. The service moves at 'island time,' which is ideal for those wanting to linger over a mai tai but perhaps not for those in a strict rush to get to their next excursion. It is a genuine spot for families and casual travelers who value a front-row seat to the ocean over white-tablecloth formality.

Cute beachfront cafe with amazing service. It was super enjoyable to watch the whales and dolphins breach in the ocean while enjoying our breakfast. Lots of choices. Fresh food.

I really liked this place. I wish the weather was better so that we could fully enjoy the outside. It's right on the Beach with great views. Small intimate place. Drinks, service and food were all great. Good mix of different types of food. All palates will be satisfied here. There was really good live music during dinner too.

On a recent trip to Maui, we stayed at the Kaanapali Villas. For this review, I want to talk about the on site restaurant,Castaway Cafe. After a few hours on the beach, we were heading back to our condo when tantalizing smells emanating from the open air dining area stopped us in our tracks. As we approached the hostess stand, we were told that since it was such a cool, cloudy day, the head chef decided to create a creamy chicken soup utilizing some odds and ends around their kitchen. I asked if it was the soup we were smelling and they said that it was and brought us a sample. Creamy, hearty, flavorful with big chunks of chicken & elbow macaroni, we ordered the biggest bowl they had! In addition to soup, our party of 5 partook of the fish & chips, fish tacos, kids mac n cheese & of course I had the nachos. These were not just any nachos, the pork was uniquely seasoned with a delicate sauce, the beans hearty & flavorful, with crisp homemade chips, pico, cheese sauce and guac. The fish n chips were well cooked, lightly seasoned & came with a fun basket of french fries while the mahi mahi tacos were served with cilantro lime crema, pico and a side of chips n salsa. The Castaway has a seated, full bar, indoor & outdoor table seating, lovely views of the ocean and excellent service. They also had live music from local performers the night we were there. We interacted with several staff members, all of whom were professional, kind and friendly. We highly recommend the Castaway Cafe if you are looking for a family friendly, delicious meal while visiting Kaanapali Villas.

Castaway Café is one of the cutest little spots along the waterfront and very easy to access. Great brunch: Eggs Benedict and the French Toast are excellent; highly recommended. Classic American breakfast and pancakes are less impressive (a bit spongy). Lovely location and very kind waitstaff. The hosts who assign tables weren’t especially friendly (experienced twice with two different ladies).

We came to Castaway Café for brunch and had a really pleasant experience overall. Parking can be a bit tricky, but the restaurant has two free parallel spots right next to the café if you get lucky. Otherwise, you can check in at the hotel front desk for parking validation and park nearby, which helps. We were seated immediately in a beautiful outdoor table just a few feet from the ocean. The view and atmosphere were fantastic and definitely one of the highlights of the visit. For food, I ordered the omelet, my wife had the avocado toast, and we also shared a banana bread. Compared to other breakfasts we’ve had in Hawaii, this was actually very good. The food was well-prepared and flavorful. The banana bread itself was tasty and moist. The only small downside was the butter served with the banana bread — it was salted, which didn’t really pair well with a sweet banana bread. The coffee was also just okay, nothing special. Overall, great location, solid food, and a relaxing brunch experience. Definitely worth visiting, especially for the oceanfront seating.

Came here for dinner and it was an amazing experience. We were seated immediately at a table near the ocean which treated us to a fantastic sunset. Our server Conseta (I hope the spelling is correct) was fantastic. Very quirky individual, but in an entertaining way, singing a lot of good songs as she came around the tables. The food and drinks were excellent. I ordered the lava flow and paradise punch to drink and the fish tacos to eat. This was one of the best dining experiences of my entire vacation. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Great Breakfast With Big Portions and Ocean Views! We had breakfast at Castaway Café yesterday and really enjoyed it. We arrived right when they opened at 8:00 AM and there was already a line out the door, but the staff moved quickly and we were seated in the section closest to the ocean. It was covered, which was perfect since the rain came and went — we stayed completely dry while still enjoying the view. The food portions were large and everything tasted great. We ordered the breakfast burrito and an omelette, and both were excellent. Our server was very attentive, and the pricing felt more than fair considering the portion sizes and beachfront location. We would definitely come back again for breakfast here.

Food is average, but location is great and service is outstanding!! I ate there 5 times - my order was taken 2-4 mins after I was seated, drinks arrived 2 mins after my order, food 2 mins (cheesecake) to 10 mins (steak) after my order, that‘s amazing! The people are also super friendly, it was a pleasure.
