Tamuras
About
A in the Windward Side
Tucked away inside a bustling liquor store in the heart of Kailua, this local institution defies traditional dining expectations. You won't find white tablecloths or formal waiters here. Instead, you walk past aisles of craft beer and premium spirits to reach a refrigerated counter that many locals consider the gold standard for fresh seafood on the island.
Island-Style Freshness
The magic happens at the poke station. The chefs prepare blocks of ahi tuna with a precision that rivals high-end sushi bars. You can smell the sharp, clean scent of ocean-fresh fish mixed with the savory, toasted aroma of sesame oil and Hawaiian sea salt. The spicy ahi is a particular standout, carrying just enough heat to cut through the richness of the fish without overpowering it. Whether you opt for a classic shoyu-marinated bowl or the more experimental spicy variations, the texture of the fish remains firm and buttery.
The Local Routine
Be prepared for the reality of a popular takeout spot: parking in this Kailua shopping center can be a game of patience during peak lunch hours. The atmosphere is casual, fast-paced, and strictly functional. It is the perfect place to grab a generous scoop of poke to take down to the nearby sands of Lanikai Beach or to bring home for an impromptu gathering. Don't expect a place to sit and linger; this is grab-and-go fuel for those who value quality ingredients over a formal dining setup. If you are exploring the Windward side and craving an authentic, no-frills taste of Hawaii, this is a mandatory stop.

First time ordering poke bowl, and man they didn't disappoint me, their poke is delicious! Ordered spicy poke and Ahi poke with fried garlic and some forikake on the rice!

One of the best for Poke on the Island! Great selection of poke, all kinds of flavors. Located in the back of the store. You can get a bowl with poke and rice makes for a great lunch/snack. They have a great selection of alcohol too and you can find pretty much anything you are looking for. They have a couple of locations around the island. If you are in Hawaii stop in you won’t be disappointed.

Solid delivery on wide variety of poke, heavily Japanese and Korean-influenced in flavor options. Geared towards locals, no doubt. #1 - All Ahi Poke Bowl, generous chunks of raw tuna served with two scoops of rice, opt for the dressed version with Tamura’s Sauce. By the pound options also excellent. Kimchee Mussels and Tako Sesame are definite no-regrets. Best after-beach treat when in need of some clean protein and electrolyte replenishment. Novelties include Korean soju and Armenian lavash crackers/bread (perfect for charcuterie boards or dips).
