Kono's Northshore
About
Slow-Roasted Island Flavors
If you find yourself wandering through the windward side of Oahu, the savory scent of applewood-smoked meat is a reliable compass leading straight to Kono’s. This casual breakfast and lunch spot has built its reputation on a single, unwavering dedication: 12-hour slow-roasted kalua pork. It is the kind of place where the menu is straightforward, the portions are massive, and the vibe is quintessentially local.
The Northshore Breakfast Experience
The breakfast bombers are the main event here. Imagine a flour tortilla packed with eggs, roasted potatoes, cheese, and that signature tender, shredded pork, all grilled until golden. It is a hearty fuel for those heading out to surf or hike the surrounding Koʻolau mountain trails. While the indoor seating is compact, the outdoor picnic tables offer that breezy, salty-air Kailua atmosphere that makes a morning meal feel like a true island escape.
A Local Institution
Beyond the breakfast bombs, their milkshakes—thick, icy, and generous—are essential for cooling down after a humid day. Don’t be surprised if you have to circle the block a few times to snag a parking spot; this slice of Northshore-style comfort food is a magnet for both locals and travelers in the know. Whether you order a sandwich or a plate, the pork carries a distinct smoky profile that avoids being overly salty, providing a balanced, melt-in-your-mouth texture that defines authentic Hawaiian comfort cuisine. It is loud, busy, and unpretentious—exactly how a neighborhood favorite should be.

Absolutely amazing BBQ. Hands down some of the best pulled pork I’ve ever had and the BBQ Sauce is incredible. You HAVE to try it. Good little shops next door too!

I had the Old School which barely had a little bits of cabbage, not slaw. The bbq sauce was barely drizzled on. I had them add some cabbage and bbq sauce and it was better. The buns were soft but too big compared to the meat. My husbands sandwich was missing the advocado he had added to the order. Another sandwich was too dry. They need to revamp their menu and do better. There was water dripping from the ceiling and tables were dirty. The cashier was nice though and cleaned the tables for us.

Stopped by for a quick low key bite to eat, we shared the nachos and each got a lemonade, pineapple and guava. The gal made our nachos with love and pointed out she makes them in layers for maximum cheesiness. I appreciated the care and the guava bbq sauce was fantastic!

So, the little thing I had for lunch was really good : the kalua slider and the pork were delicious. The slider was soft, sweet, very yummy. The pork was tasty, tender and perfectly cook. But as you can see… a very expensive « cheap » eat. 15 dollars for such a little sandwich and a pack of chips was so disappointing. And don’t take the tacos, they’re so small it’s ridiculous :( go for their chuns, you won’t leave hungry like me

Hubby and I stopped in for lunch after a morning at nearby Kailua Beach and had a nice lunch at Kono's. We split the pork plate which included their 12-hour roasted pork, rice, mac salad, and green salad. We loved how tender the meat was, and especially loved both the guava BBQ sauce and papaya dressing. The shop is fairly small, however we were able to find seats. The girl at the counter was very friendly. Unfortunately they were too backed up with orders so shortly after our arrival was placed they had to temporarily stop taking orders. Too bad because we enjoyed our lunch. There's plenty of parking either along the street or a lot a few doors down. Would return.

This Hawaiian Bowl was so good! Pork was tender and flavorful. Rice was cooked well and cabbage added a nice crunch. The thing that took it over was the guava BBQ sauce. I could drink the sauce, it was that good! The guy at the counter was really nice and patient. For the lemonade/limeade I asked what would pair well with the guava flavor and he recommended the lime. He wasn’t wrong. Definitely come here!

We loved this place and will definitely be back to try more things. Really great food, really fantastic staff. The nachos were a great portion and so much flavor. The bomber was my husband's favorite, and the tacos were really yummy. The only part that I would say was not the greatest was the corn tortillas. The limeade was so yummy and the peanut butter cup milkshake was delicious as well

Took my friend that was visiting out of town here because I enjoyed my first visit in Haleiwa. He got the Kailua sliders, which he demolished before I got a pic. I took a suggested sale from the cashier, she said try the Pig on Grass. I will say I just like the pulled pork, the papaya dressing was pretty good but I think the only thing that threw me off was the guava bbq sauce. That's why I gave 4 stars because in my rule book, "sauce is boss" and this wasn't a very banging sauce. The ratio of ketchup was so dominant I didn't felt like I was degrading their amazing pulled pork. So I just annexed the guava bbq sauce and it remained in the closed ramekin. Overall the cashier was amazing made the initial contact effortlessly positive but the star is always that pork. Will be back to try her other suggestion.

I went a few weeks ago and it was a chill place and they let us take our time deciding. I am not use to that from where I am so I didn’t know what to do at first. The nachos had a lot of meat and were delicious they could definitely feed two people. I got a sandwich with chips. It was big as well they have good portions for the amount you pay. The meat was very tender and flavorful. The milkshake I got was the strawberry cheesecake it was nice and sweet to end my meal with. I would stop by again for a good bite.
