Kalapawai Market - Kailua Beach
About
A Kailua Beach Tradition
Since 1932, this iconic corner store has served as the unofficial heartbeat of the windward side. Located just steps from the turquoise waters of Kailua Beach, the store maintains an old-world charm that feels far removed from the high-rise bustle of Honolulu. You will smell the faint tang of sea salt mixing with the rich, dark aroma of roasted coffee beans the moment you step through the screen door.
The Beach Day Essential
Locals know the drill: grab a coffee early, order a signature deli sandwich, and head to the sand before the afternoon trade winds kick in. The menu features reliable, stacked sandwiches like the classic turkey or roast beef, alongside house-made pasta salads that taste best when consumed with sandy feet. The store is packed with personality—creaky wood floors and narrow aisles that make navigating the local craft beer selection feel like a well-earned treasure hunt.
Planning Your Visit
While the atmosphere is laid back, it is important to note that the parking lot is notoriously tight; most seasoned regulars prefer to bike or walk from their beach rental. Whether you are grabbing a quick morning fuel-up or packing a picnic for a full day of lounging by the Pacific, this market offers an authentic slice of Kailua life that has remained a constant throughout the decades. It is the perfect stop for those who value tradition over pretense, offering a genuine community gathering point that feels just as much like a time capsule as it does a convenient beach-day utility.

The staff was nice, though a warmer and more welcoming vibe would have made the experience even better. Not sure if it was because I wasn't a local. The place had a charming local feel, which I personally enjoyed. It’s just a stone’s throw away from the beach and also has al fresco seating, making it a relaxing spot to grab a meal or cold drink. Aside from their sandwiches, they offer plenty of delicious options. My favorite was the Shoyu Ahi Poke Bowl with Kimchi — flavorful, fresh, and very satisfying. They also have a spicy version for those who want an extra kick. They also sell souvenirs, which makes the shop a fun little find while exploring the area. Definitely a nice spot to stumble upon.

Casual market with a huge deli selection and coffee bar. Quick walk from the beach with minimal parking and outdoor seating available. My husband still hasn’t stopped talking about their Italian sub.

Got two sandwiches (Kailua Club and Da Tsunami) for $14.50 each and a bag of pretzels. The sandwiches were good. Super cute vibe and yummy looking baked goods which we do not get. the prices were a little pricey but ig that's just kailua prices.

CUSTOMER SERVICE NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: We have supported Kalapawai Market for nearly 30 years—our children even worked there alongside the original owner’s son when they were teenagers and attended the same school. Last week, we sent a friend to purchase flowers for someone celebrating her birthday, and the tropical bouquet received was clearly in poor condition and not suitable as a gift. I took dated photos when I saw them. When I returned to the store (a week later) and showed the manager the stamped photos, she said she thought the flowers looked good and that any issue was simply a matter of opinion. She also explained that this is not a flower shop but a general store and therefore offered no acknowledgment, replacement, or solution. The interaction felt rushed and unwelcoming, dismissive and embarrassing. I was hoping for basic recognition and customer care, especially as a long-time supporter of this local business.

We stopped here on a whim for lunch after swimming a Waimanalo Beach. They have a wonderful variety of food, from local dishes to pizza for our pickiest of eaters. The poke nachos and garlic shrimp were my favorite meals of our weeklong trip!!

Stumbled upon . Not mad at it. Good juice, and have food options. And ice cream /popsicles. There is a few tables outside. But you can just go to the beach and enjoy yourself with your treats. They have coffee , subs, wraps, sandwiches, and a little sweet treatz…. ❤️

This is officially one of our favorite places to grab a bite to eat in Hawaii! Highly recommend their iced mocha lattes, the Pesto Chicken Sandwich and the Coconut Mala-Be!

Love this little market. I had one of the best poke in town. The papaya was so sweet. My hubby enjoyed the fish tacos. Orders to go & we ate at the covered benches outside. Parking was kind of tricky. Will return for sure 👌🏾
