Kalapawai Cafe & Deli (750 Kailua Rd)
About
The Heart of Kailua Town
Walking into Kalapawai Cafe & Deli feels like stepping into the living room of the Windward side. Since its inception, this spot has moved beyond its origins as a humble general store to become a cornerstone of the Kailua dining scene. The space hums with the clatter of silverware and the low murmur of local conversations, creating a grounded, unpretentious energy that keeps the neighborhood coming back.
Island-Inspired Flavors
The kitchen, led by a team dedicated to island-fresh ingredients, excels in elevating local staples. The signature Kalapawai Burger remains a non-negotiable order for many, often paired with their house-made dressings that capture the bright, acidic notes of local citrus. If you stop by during the dinner service, the pan-seared fresh catch is usually the move, highlighting the day’s bounty from nearby waters. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee permeates the morning air, while the evening atmosphere shifts toward a mellow, wine-friendly environment.
Practical Notes for Visitors
The layout is intimate, which is part of the charm, though it does mean that peak hours can get quite lively—and occasionally loud. If you are arriving during the busy brunch shift, be prepared for a bit of a dance when looking for parking in the surrounding Kailua lots. It is the kind of place best suited for those who appreciate a slower pace, long catch-up conversations, and food that prioritizes quality over flashiness. Whether you are grabbing a quick deli sandwich for a beach day or settling into a booth for a relaxed dinner, the connection to the local community is palpable in every interaction.

Food was so delicious!! I forgot to make this post a while back. When I went our server was Egeria and we were also helped by Chase. Both such amazing people! It added to the whole experience. I enjoy when the food is fresh - taste like farm to table kind of place - and folks love to where they work.

They've done much with not a lot of space! Beautiful, quaint atmosphere with many vegetarian and vegan options I'd love to try (many other regular menu options too). My hummus plate was a lovely presentation of delicious food! There were so many drink options to choose from. My iced Americano was very good. Husband loved his veggie burger and the tomato jam was an excellent touch! He also said it was perfectly cooked, which we find at other places happens not a lot. He also very much enjoyed their banana bread (they had several patries that looked yummy). They have a parking lot, but it was full when we arrived, but were able to meter park right across the street was a couple dollars. A great find, highly recommend!

The staff was very nice and inviting. This was the best Chai Tea Latte I've had in Kialua so far. My wife enjoyed the cedar salad and I had the pastrami Ruben, we were both very pleased with the food. The only down side was they did not have a high chair for our grandchild. Fortunately, there's plenty of room outside for a stroller if you want to go that route. All in all I definitely recommend it. I would say if you're going for lunch at lunch time, be prepared to find you own parking.

A great place for brunch/lunch after visiting the nearby Farmers Market. The service was friendly and efficient. The sandwiches were good with fresh ingredients. There were both indoor and outdoor seating areas that were tight, but comfortable.

Dropped by Kalapalai Cafe for a quick breakfast, and it was one of those meals that keeps you thinking. The breakfast burritos were a bit of a culinary puzzle - somewhat bland on their own, but transformed by the accompanying salsa. It's like the salsa was the secret ingredient that turned a plain Jane into a flavor queen. The cappuccino was the real star of the show. Rich, smooth, and reminiscent of a quaint Italian cafe, it proved that great coffee doesn't always need a fancy mug to shine. Served in a simple to-go cup, it was a reminder that sometimes simplicity wins. At around $10 for two burritos, it's a reasonable deal for the area. Not a gourmet experience, but an authentic taste of local dining. The kind of spot that has character, even if that character needs a little seasoning. Would I come back? Yes. Because sometimes an imperfect meal tells a better story than a perfect one. Just remember to ask for extra salsa - it's the hero this breakfast needs.

We stopped to get breakfast/brunch on our way to Hanauma Bay! It was quick, easy and tasted good! The breakfast burrito was very filling, good amount of meat, salsa on the side was mid. The Italian sandwich was fresh and tasty. Maybe could use a little more meat. Pastries was delicious! Their patio is very cute, a little separated off from the streets by greenery which is nice!

We had such a nice time here. We were lucky , got to sit right away on Thursday around 1030am. The cashier/waitress made a mistake and only got 1 sandwich instead of 3. So my family had to wait longer for their meal. Everything tasted good, and I loved the atmosphere in and out. Coffee is good too! I wish they keep up with the coffee machine because they ran out while I was there. I would love to come again.

GO HERE! BEST steak I have eaten in a very long time. The service was awesome and very friendly. It was a busy night when we visited and they quickly set up a space for us on the front patio because inside was full. Our server Kai was so great with our kids and very attentive. Everything we ordered was fantastic and it felt more like a fine dining experience than a visit to a Cafe/Deli. If you come for dinner don't skip out on bringing home some muffins for breakfast the next day. They were huge and tasted so good. It was allergy friendly which is always so great to find when traveling.
