Foodland (108 Hekili St.)
About
An Island Culinary Essential
Stepping into this Kailua institution off Hekili Street feels less like a grocery run and more like a local rite of passage. While the exterior might look like your standard supermarket, the interior reveals a legendary poke counter that rivals high-end seafood spots across Oahu. The air is always thick with the scent of seasoned limu, shoyu, and fresh ahi being sliced behind the glass.
The Poke Counter Experience
For residents and visitors exploring the windward side, the draw here is the sheer variety of poke. You will find everything from traditional Hawaiian-style cubes tossed with kukui nut and sea salt to spicy mayo variations that pack a genuine punch. It is the go-to fuel for beachgoers heading to Lanikai or Kailua Beach. Grab a couple of containers, a bag of rice, and a chilled drink, and you have the quintessential local picnic ready to go.
The Local Rhythm
Expect a bustling atmosphere, especially during the lunch rush or on weekends when the windward community crowds the aisles. It is loud, vibrant, and moves at the pace of island life. Parking can be a bit of a dance due to the shared lot in this popular commercial district, so be prepared to loop around once if the timing is off. This is not a place for white-tablecloth service; it is a utilitarian, flavor-forward space that highlights the best of Hawaii's casual food culture. Whether you are a local picking up dinner after work or a visitor looking to eat like you live here, this Kailua hub remains a foundational pillar of the neighborhood's daily life.

No bathroom for customers:-( but the poke tho. I think I vote for the best one on the island hands down. The price is also unbeatable too. I can’t eat poke anywhere else now Lol

There was a 2-star review 5 months before mine about this branch needing to work on customer service. I can confirm that at least one team member who was stationed at the express lane that definitely needs to work on it. Or maybe not put him in a customer-facing position? I’m going to assume based on my experience that management will know who I’m talking about. The rest of the staff seem lovely though!

Foodland Kailua is a fantastic local gem! The poke bar is a standout, offering fresh, delicious options with friendly staff who even provide samples for newcomers. The store has a great selection of local treats, cheeses, and essentials. Prices are reasonable, and the rewards program adds value. A must-visit for a true Hawaiian grocery experience! 😎
