Chinese Garden Restaurant
About
A Local Staple in the Heart of Kailua
If you find yourself navigating the busy streets of Kailua looking for a no-frills, reliable lunch spot, Chinese Garden Restaurant hits the mark. This is the kind of place where locals head when they want familiar Cantonese staples without the fuss of white-tablecloth service. The room is modest and bright, filled with the clatter of porcelain and the hum of kitchen staff moving quickly between tables.
Cantonese Comfort Food
The menu leans heavily into traditional favorites. Their roast duck and char siu are consistent, offering that deep, savory glaze that pairs perfectly with a scoop of steaming jasmine rice. It is an ideal stop for a casual family meal or a quick bite after a morning at the beach. You will notice the menu is expansive, favoring variety over trendiness, which makes it a safe harbor if you are dining with a group that has conflicting cravings.
What to Expect
Stepping inside, the aroma of garlic, ginger, and soy sauce is immediate. It is an unpretentious environment that values speed and value. One thing to keep in mind: during the peak lunch rush, the dining area can get quite loud, reflecting the restaurant's popularity with the nearby Windward Oahu workforce. Parking in this part of town can be a bit of a puzzle during midday, so plan for a short walk if the lot is full. It is straightforward, honest cooking that focuses on delivering hot, comforting plates to the Kailua community.

Really surprised this place is still open. When we got there we saw a big pile of raw pork sitting out in the dining room adjacent to where we were seated. When we left it was still sitting there. The server came by once to take our order and once to drop it off. Never once came back which was especially frustrating because she gave me something other than what I ordered. I was able to finish mine because I was so hungry my fiance's lemon chicken was so bad she didn't have more than 2 bites and left the rest. I eventually had to get up to find the server to pay because she just left us without ever coming back.

Best soup been 12 years since I left Kailua and the owner still remembers me and my order always ate here for lunch when I lived here. Happy it was still open enjoyed the soup still tastes as delicious as I remember it.

The crispy Gau Gee and rice tasted fine. But we did not like anything else we ordered. Which was Mongolian Beef and Stuffed Tofu. Burnt beef and onion or at least over cooked. I used to love stuffed tofu. But this was spongy, so maybe if you like fried tofu it would be different for you. But the taste of the sauce was not to my liking at all. I prefer the traditional gravy. Very rarely do I not eat something outright. Not for me at all.
