About
A Tropical Escape to Java
Tucked away just off the main drag in Kailua, Cafe Kopi brings a distinct Indonesian culinary perspective to the windward side of Oahu. The space operates with a laid-back, open-air feeling that matches the coastal rhythm of the surrounding neighborhood. It is the kind of spot where the air smells faintly of roasted coffee beans and galangal, drawing in locals seeking a break from the standard Hawaiian plate lunch routine.
Signature Spice and Soul
The kitchen centers its menu around traditional staples like Beef Rendang and Nasi Goreng. The Rendang is slow-cooked until the coconut milk and spice paste reduce into a rich, dark gravy that clings to tender meat. Expect bold, authentic heat—this isn't toned-down for the casual tourist palette. Whether you sit at the counter or snag a small table, the background noise is usually a mix of soft Indonesian pop and the sound of the nearby busy streets of Kailua.
Local Considerations
Because the shop is situated in a quieter corner of the Kihapai corridor, the physical footprint is compact. It can get cozy quickly during the lunch rush, so plan for a tight squeeze if you’re heading in between 12:00 and 1:00 PM. Parking around these Kailua blocks can be a bit of a scavenger hunt, but the payoff of authentic, fragrant fried rice makes the extra walk well worth the effort. It is an ideal stop for solo diners or pairs who appreciate a no-frills, flavor-forward experience in a neighborhood that values authenticity over polish.

Spacious and nice interior space for a coffee shop. The latte was ok. $1 extra for oat milk seems excessive. Tiramisu was essentially all cream cheese—the worse tiramisu I’ve ever had anywhere.

I had breakfast at cafe Kopi today and it was honestly the best breakfast I’ve had in Hawaii. The portions are big, the food is very filling, and everything tasted amazing. The coffee here is incredible — I ordered just a regular cappuccino, but it tasted so good. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend trying the salmon sandwich (bagel lox) — it’s delicious! And don’t miss the purple cheesecake, it’s incredible. Definitely recommend this place!🌞💜

Loved the food and coffee. Ube cheesecake was amazing. Our breakfast bagel sandwiches were really good. Great portions, and the mustard gave them a real nice kick. Great service. Will definitely be back on our next trip.
