Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice (333 Dairy Rd)
About
The Gold Standard of Maui Shave Ice
Stepping into this Kahului favorite, the air is thick with the scent of tropical fruit syrups and the rhythmic whir of ice shavers. Located conveniently near the central hub of Maui, this outpost delivers the hallmark fluffy, snow-like texture that put the brand on the map. Unlike the crunchy, chunky ice found at roadside stands, here the consistency is gossamer-fine, allowing the house-made syrups—like Li Hing Mui, Pog, and Coconut—to soak deep into every spoonful rather than pooling at the bottom of the cup.
What to Expect at the Counter
The menu is an exercise in customization. For the quintessential experience, opt for the Haleakala—a decadent mix of coconut and sweetened condensed milk. Locals and visitors alike often add a scoop of creamy macadamia nut ice cream at the base, which acts as a rich anchor for the icy sweetness above. The mochi bits and azuki beans are house-prepped, providing a chewy, earthy contrast to the vibrant fruit flavors.
Navigating the Kahului Rush
Because of its prime location, the lines can spill out toward the parking lot during the mid-afternoon heat. It is a social, bustling environment where you might find yourself elbow-to-elbow with surfers and families alike. While the seating is limited, the proximity to shopping centers makes it a perfect pit stop before heading to the airport or trekking toward the North Shore. Expect a lively, energetic atmosphere where the sound of plastic spoons scraping against cups is the soundtrack of the afternoon. If you are in a hurry, try visiting during off-peak hours to avoid the wait, though for many, standing in line is simply part of the rite of passage when visiting this staple of central Maui culture.

The ice was smooth. The staff were friendly. The flavor wasn’t very strong. Really busy location. Crowded. Mine ran out of flavoring at the bottom. Only one picnic table and benches around the side for seating. I expected more after so many positive reviews.

I was told to try this place by a friend from the area and I’m glad I did! I got the “Lahaina” (pineapple, coconut, and banana) with vanilla ice cream on the bottom and the “snow cap” (sweetened condensed milk mixture) on top. It was amazing! The line was pretty long so there was definitely a wait, but it was worth it!

Listen, if you see a line wrapping around the block in Kahului, just get in it. Do not ask questions. I stood in a queue so long I was prepared to start paying property taxes on my spot, but the staff here are absolute ninjas and moved through that crowd impressively fast. The line literally never stopped the entire time we were there. We ordered three bowls: one called "The Best," a Passion fruit and Coconut masterpiece, and a Blue Hawaii and Watermelon combo that I'm pretty sure permanently stained my son's face a vibrant, radioactive color. But here is the critical insider information: you must get the vanilla ice cream hidden at the bottom and the "snow cap" (sweetened condensed milk) poured over the top. I didn't consult a medical professional before consuming that much dairy and sugar in one sitting, and frankly, I don't regret a thing. It elevates a humble cup of shaved ice into a tropical awakening. Five stars. I am composed entirely of condensed milk now.

No artificial colors or flavors = delicious! We are here on vacation and had never had Ululani's before. She recommended that I try the Sunset Beach with Coconut Ice Cream as the base and sweetened condensed milk as a topping; it was fabulous!! Thank you! We'll be back!

I guess I’ve never had real Hawaiian shaved ice before trying this place because this tasted a hundred times better. The young lady who served us was very kind and gave us stellar service. She even asked us to let her know if there wasn’t enough syrup on our ice. She could add more. I had the coconut lovers snow capped and it was delicious!! It was perfect to eat on a sunny Maui day!!

We ordered the snow cone with the macadamia nut ice cream underneath and the snow cap condensed milk poured over top. It was delicious! Hope to stop here again next time we are in town. The only con we had was that it took about 25 min or longer from being in line to receiving our order due to some groups having large orders. Would maybe suggest pivoting to a different execution pattern for those occasions.

Fun little spot! The servers behind the counter were great - made every effort to engage each customer, especially young families. The ice is shaved very fine and they put on the perfect amount of syrup - plus they make an effort every time to tell each customer to come back if they need more syrup. Parking is fine, with plenty around the corner next to the pub. They also have a key for the washrooms - which once again is around the corner from the pub.

We heard really good things about Ululani and can finally tell you it’s… good. We had high expectations and it didn’t disappoint but definitely didn’t blow us out of the water either. They have an extensive menu with some pretty interesting flavors if trying new things is your speed. We ordered strawberry shave ice and a sunset beach shave ice. The syrup here falls a bit fast so eating it quicker may be better. The syrup flavor was good, not outstanding. The snow cap is also okay, not anything to write home about. I think we may have gone into here expecting a bit too much which is why there’s a tinge of disappointment in this review but it really is a solid shave ice at the end of the day.
