A True Kahului Watering Hole

If you are looking for the polished, tourist-heavy side of Maui, keep driving past the industrial heart of Kahului. The Hang Loose Lounge is where the local trade workers, airport staff, and residents come to find a cold glass and conversation. It is a classic, no-frills dive bar that prioritizes function over flash. The interior is defined by low lighting and the steady hum of chatter, punctuated by the occasional crack of a pool cue hitting a ball.

Drinks and Daily Rhythms

Expect a menu focused on the essentials. You won’t find elaborate craft cocktails with muddled herbs here; instead, the bartenders pour generous wells and keep the local draft beers flowing. It is an unpretentious spot perfect for a post-shift wind-down or a low-key evening when you want to avoid the crowds of the nearby resorts. The smell of salt air and the faint scent of classic bar snacks linger in the room, creating an atmosphere that feels like a permanent Friday afternoon.

Notes for the Visitor

Keep in mind that this is a quintessential neighborhood haunt, meaning the pace is dictated by the patrons, not a schedule. It can get lively during major sporting events, and the space is intimate enough that you will likely hear your neighbor’s conversation whether you want to or not. Parking in this part of town can get tight during peak hours, so take your time maneuvering the lot. Whether you are an island local or just passing through Kahului and craving a seat at a real, salt-of-the-earth bar, this lounge delivers exactly what it promises—a place to hang loose without the pretension.

Description says “open air” and it is absolutely not. It is a dark dive bar. Seemed to be mostly locals. AC was cold and drinks were cheap- great place for a pre flight drink!

The owner was amazing and funny. I had the best night of my life at his bar. I was on my way to the airport and had some time to kill before my flight, but going to this bar was definitely not a waste of time. I hope to return to Hawaii someday just to go back to his bar.

Had a blast with Kelly Crystal and the other customers. Thanks for the shots, guys! Got my trip off to a great start 💖 Trying to figure out crystals 11-year old nephews arithmetic word math puzzle had us thinking for a solid hour, I still want to know the answer! 😂 I’ll definitely be back!

Hmm... Where to start. We were bar-hopping on this particular Saturday night. ATMOSPHERE: Divey, plain, and a simple old open air bar in a strip mall along one of Maui's busiest roads. The wheeled bar stools are lumpy. There are humorous signs abound behind the sunken bar with two TV's. The vibe is slow & dreary so go with some friends. FOOD: Nada. But, there are a few house snacks like peanuts, arare (Japanese rice crackers seasoned with soy sauce), and chips. BEVERAGE: Full bar. Prices are comparable. SERVICE: Out female bartender was super friendly and down to earth. OVERALL: A tiny and okay place to grab a drink after work. Need food? Head next door to Amigos or Minit Stop.

A big “Mahalo” all the way from NYC for Aura for her great service, patience with my questions and overall great disposition. Aura was friendly, quick, efficient and intelligent—providing a real insider’s perspective on the island’s current state of social, political and economic affairs. A great place to go to end the night on a good note.

This was the bar we were looking for our whole trip. This place has it all: a great bartender, local people, and an amazing atmosphere. If this bar isn't your style, you don't belong at bars..... I would give five stars for food but they don't have any, but they do encourage you to order from the restaurants nearby and bring it in.
