Safeway Deli (1090 Ho'okele Street)

Gas prices are probably the best on the island. Store prices are really high unless you join their club. If you join their club, some of the specials are lower prices than Walmart.

One of our favorite cashiers Pedro is always so helpful, quick and courteous. The store was stocked well and the temperature not too cold. They had all our items we went in for and we came out with some extra treats too! Driving from Haiku is not so tedious when the personnel are enjoyable to talk story with. It’s nice to be recognized and remembered.

Someone here complained about the cabinets being locked up. Like this is common sense. It’s the same way you’d lock your door at home, so that no valuable items of yours go missing. The store is doing the same.

Christmas Eve, this store was BANANAS! People were all over this store, and everyone seemed to be in festive mood. There were rather long lines, but people were really being nice to each other. Saw several employees taking a moment to laugh and smile amongst themselves. The shelves were as neat as could be on Christmas Eve, and the employees were quickly trying to get this done ASAP! This store is huge, well lit, with isles clear of stuff.

Great selection of Poke supplies. Many sauces from around the world. Sushi grade fish and a large wine selection can be found here.

Maui's newest 24/7 Safeway opened on 7/24/19 in the brand new and still being-constructed Hookele Shopping Center. Also a first for Maui is the island's first Safeway Fuel Station which will open in a few months. Because it was opening day, a balloon arch and rose giveaway greeted customers as we entered along with live entertainment and prize giveaways. There are numerous seats and tables along the sidewalk out front. As you enter, to the left is a Starbucks, and in-store eateries The Cafe, Boars Head Fine Crafted Foods, deli, bakery, and pokē counters. I noticed a lot of prepared foods including sandwiches, salads, and even a fried chicken wing bar. Nuts, anyone? They've got a ton of bins to choose from. There were numerous free food samplings including pokē. The right side of the store is home to the pharmacy and Bank of Hawaii, with a second and closer entry/exit. The floral and customer service areas are right in the middle. Aisles are wide and not too high. There are 8 cash registers and 4 self checkouts. This new location is bigger than both the former and Maui Lani locations, but not as gargantuan as Lahaina's newly expanded/renovated store. TIP: The Safeway on Kamehameha Avenue next to Ross closed and moved to this new location. OVERALL: I've never been in a grocery store on opening day and it was surreal to see fully-stocked shelves with everything neat and organized. They'll do great here, regardless of it being out-of-the-way for most central residents. I wonder who'll take the old location's place?

This is the best Safeway and, arguably, the best grocery store on the island. The store is bright, modern, and spacious. There's a great area for produce and deli, complete with a lot of food counters. The selection is excellent with a vast array of food and household staples plus a good assortment of international products, including areas for Asian and Hispanic items. Prices are reasonable (for Hawaii), especially if you're a member of Safeway's "For U" rewards program (it's free to join). As an added bonus, the store is on the approach path to Kahului Airport so you can often see planes flying low from the parking lot!
