A Kahului Staple for Traditional Japanese Comfort

Stepping into Restaurant Matsu feels like a quiet departure from the bustling pace of Maui’s central hub. Located conveniently near the Kahului airport corridor, this spot has built a long-standing reputation among locals who crave honest, straightforward Japanese cooking without the unnecessary frills found at more tourist-heavy venues.

The Art of the Teishoku

The menu leans heavily into the Japanese teishoku tradition—complete meals served on a single tray featuring a main, pickles, miso soup, and rice. The tonkatsu is a standout here; the breading maintains a distinct, satisfying crunch that gives way to tender, juicy pork. If you visit, keep an eye out for their local-style sashimi specials, which showcase the freshness of island-caught fish, often served with a sharp kick of freshly grated wasabi.

Atmosphere and Local Flavor

The dining room carries an old-school, functional charm. You won’t find moody ambient lighting or minimalist decor here; instead, you get bright, utilitarian interiors and the steady hum of conversation from regulars who have been coming here for decades. It is the kind of place where the service is efficient and no-nonsense. Be prepared to navigate the parking lot, as it can get quite cramped during the lunch rush when the nearby business crowd flocks in for a quick bowl of hot udon or a bento box.

Matsu offers a window into the daily life of Kahului residents. It is an ideal stop for a reliable, filling lunch or a relaxed dinner when you want the focus to remain squarely on the food rather than the pageantry. The steam rising from the miso bowls and the clatter of ceramic dishes against wooden tables create an authentic backdrop for a genuine taste of Maui’s culinary heritage.

This is an old-school local Japanese restaurant tucked away in an industrial zone, with interior decor looking like it's from the 1960s. It's as far from the resort glitz as you can get. But if you're looking for authenticity this is the place. Even the waiter spoke pidgin ("Careful deez buggaz stay hot!") The food was actually really really good, better than you'd expect from a neighborhood Japanese grandma kine restaurant. Basic quality of simple things like rice and broth and udon were high. The unagi was excellent. Even the yuzu cheesecake was good and surprisingly cheap.

Restaurant Matsu is a true hidden gem and now officially one of my favorite spots on Maui! It came highly recommended by locals and now I see why. As a big fan of udon soup, I had to try theirs with the tempura vegetables, and it did not disappoint. The broth was flavorful and comforting, and the tempura was perfectly crispy. I also grabbed a spamasubi (because, of course!), and it hit all the right notes; simple, satisfying, and packed with local flavor. The menu is full of tempting options, so it’s definitely a place I’ll be revisiting to try more. The service was friendly and efficient, which made the whole experience even better. If you’re in Maui and looking for something casual, delicious, and local-approved, Restaurant Matsu is the place to go. Highly recommend!

This place falls far short of a restaurant. I drank water from cracked plastic cups, ate from chipped plate, the forks so old and had a lot of scratches. We are ordered bento box and it’s not worth the money (36$) Food is not yummy. We were hungry, but we didn't eat with appetite. I don’t understand why there is so high rating. The shrimp are not good, the rice in Taki maki sushi is undercooked and dry. Ahi tuna is not bad and California roll was delicious. Customer service was not great too. We had a company of 8 people, but the waiter refused to let us join the tables together. After several unsuccessful attempts, they grudgingly allowed it.
