KFC - Kahului (East Wakea Avenue)
About
Iconic Fried Chicken in Central Maui
When you are navigating the bustle of Kahului and find yourself craving that signature blend of eleven herbs and spices, the spot on East Wakea Avenue delivers the classic fast-food reliability locals know well. Whether you are grabbing a quick lunch before heading toward the airport or picking up a bucket for a family beach gathering, this location serves as a go-to anchor for crispy, golden-fried chicken in the heart of Maui’s commercial hub.
The Experience
Stepping inside, you are met with the familiar, savory aroma of pressure-fried chicken and buttery biscuits. The atmosphere is straightforward and utilitarian, designed for efficiency rather than lingering. You will often hear the energetic rhythm of a busy kitchen crew working to keep up with the drive-thru line, which can get quite long during the peak lunch hour. It is a high-traffic spot, so if you are visiting during the midday rush, be prepared for a bit of a wait at the counter or in your vehicle.
What to Expect
The menu highlights remain the star here, from the Original Recipe tenders to those iconic mashed potatoes with gravy that many find indispensable. While the seating area is functional, most visitors opt to take their meal to go, making it a convenient choice for those who need a hearty, familiar meal without the fuss of a formal dining room. It is the kind of reliable stop that provides consistent comfort food when you are running errands throughout Kahului.

I love KFC and used to come here pretty regularly, but the customer service at this location is honestly some of the worst I’ve experienced. I come by about once or twice a week, and almost every interaction with the ladies there feel unnecessarily rude or hostile. I’m always polite, saying please, thank you, yes ma’am, etc. But it genuinely feels like the employees are annoyed that customers even exist. Almost every time I try to order at the speaker, I get cut off or pushed to the window without much communication. At the window, there’s rarely any friendliness at all. No smile, no “you’re welcome,” no basic courtesy, just attitude. I understand fast food is stressful work, but being consistently cold or rude to customers makes people not want to come back. The frustrating part is that the food is actually good, which is why I keep giving this location chances. But the service is so consistently unpleasant that it honestly makes the experience uncomfortable. I’ve even started ordering online to avoid all communication with them. I hope management addresses it, because a little kindness and professionalism would go a long way

Maui's first and lone-surviving KFC is this old faithful location. ATMOSPHERE: It's an older restaurant with drive thru. The inside is clean. FOOD: 3 Piece Meal I opted for the grilled style (drum, thigh & breast with mashed potatoes, biscuit and coleslaw.) I knew the grilled style is awesome, but what surprised me was how soft & juicy the breast piece was. Unbelievable! Total yum. Famous Bowl The portion size was bigger than I had imagined. A mountain of mashed potatoes topped with cheese, corn, gravy, and bits of boneless Original Recipe chicken. It was a tad salty but still pretty good. I still prefer the traditional combo meals but this is great if you're on the go. SERVICE: Staff are friendly.

Really the biggest draw for KFC has always been the mashed potatoes. There's no other fast food place that offers mashed potatoes of the same smooth consistency with some pretty tasty gravy to boot. Their chicken is, ironically, mediocre at best. For me, the chicken is the side and not the main course whenever I eat at KFC. In regards to the restaurant itself, it is in need of maintenance for sure. There was trash scattered all over the restaurant on arrival and one of the supports for the stained glass dividers is bent and disconnected from the glass piece itself. Under normal circumstances, I try to do a review of a dine-in experience at fast food restaurants, but the option to eat in was never presented and I was handed a take-out bag. Perhaps for the best considering the corn strewn across the floor. The state of disrepair the restaurant was in combined with their limited payment options (they do not take Amex and sometimes they take Discover while other times they don't), doesn't put this place very high up on my list of places to consider eating at and the high price point for what you end up actually getting cements the 2-star rating from me.
