Fernando's Mexican Restaurant
About
A Maui Staple for Comfort Classics
When you find yourself navigating the bustling streets of Kahului, the aroma of sizzling fajitas and simmering ranchero sauce often leads locals straight to Fernando's Mexican Restaurant. It captures the unpretentious spirit of a neighborhood cantina, where the focus remains squarely on hearty portions and familiar, comforting spices.
The Flavor of the Islands
The menu leans heavily into time-tested traditions. The chimichangas arrive golden and crisp, shattering perfectly to reveal seasoned fillings, while their signature enchiladas are smothered in a savory, soul-warming red sauce that keeps regulars coming back. If you are looking for a quick lunch break or a casual dinner, the service here is direct and efficient. Expect a lively, social atmosphere; it is the kind of place where the clinking of glasses and the hum of conversations fill the room.
Practical Dining Notes
Because of its prime location near the commercial heart of central Maui, the space can get quite busy during the standard lunch hour. While the layout is straightforward and functional, be prepared for a bit of a wait if you arrive at peak times. It is a reliable choice for families or coworkers looking for a no-fuss meal that hits the spot without breaking the bank. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite before a flight or winding down after shopping at the nearby mall, this spot delivers a consistently classic experience that mirrors the authentic hospitality of the Maui community.

A far cry from a year ago. Management and great staff changed, they lost their liquor license, no a/c, the place is falling apart, dark and not too clean. Ceiling needs to be replaced and floor heavily scrubbed and bleached. Plants on tables need water changing - mosquitos are forming. Food is basic.

They charged us for chips and bland salsa, even soda refills got charged. They told us appetizers were half price but in fact it was buy one get one for free (not what we wanted or ordered). Last but not least, I don’t want to listen to dance music / techno while I’m eating Mexican food.

When we pulled up to stop for dinner before a flight, I have to confess I was not impressed. The restaurant is part of a mostly dead mall and the it had no other customers, which did not inspire a lot of confidence. I guess this was due to the fact that their liquor license expired and won’t be renewed for 2 more weeks—our server said they usually have a lively bar! Luckily, though, I didn’t trust my first impressions because we all agreed the food was actually fantastic! I got the quesabirria and really enjoyed it. The horchata was good as well. My husband enjoyed his birria chimichanga and other family members said the quesadillas and fajitas were great, also!

Im Mexican and I LOVE this restaurant, today we ordered the "Parrillada" , even though was for 1 ppl, we both ate from there and it was more than enough. Under the parrillada, it had like a fuel can fire. That kept the meal warm all the way until the end! Mango Margaritas 100% recommended, I love them! True Mexican with the Chamoy🤤🤤. Great happy hour. Super friendly staff!
