Coconut's Fish Cafe
About
Fresh Catch in the Heart of Maui
When you find yourself roaming the industrial-meets-retail landscape of Kahului, the hunt for genuinely fresh island flavors usually leads to a line forming at the door of Coconut’s Fish Cafe. This isn’t about white tablecloths or ocean views; it’s about the fish. The atmosphere is casual, fast-paced, and filled with the hum of locals and travelers alike grabbing a quick, high-quality bite between flights or shopping trips.
The Gold Standard of Fish Tacos
The menu is anchored by a reputation that precedes it—specifically, the fish tacos. These aren't your standard street-side fare. They arrive stacked high with a secret mix of seventeen ingredients, creating a texture profile that balances the crunch of fresh cabbage with the buttery, flaky sear of locally sourced mahimahi or ono. You’ll smell the faint, savory char of the grill the moment you step inside. If you prefer your catch without the tortilla, the blackened fish plates or the coconut-crusted shrimp are reliable mainstays that highlight why this spot has become a Maui institution.
A Local Culinary Quirk
Be prepared for the communal chaos. It’s a popular spot, and during the lunch rush, finding an empty table can feel like a game of musical chairs. The floors have seen thousands of sandy flip-flops, and the volume can get quite loud as the kitchen staff calls out orders. It’s authentic, it’s noisy, and the service moves with a frantic efficiency that keeps the line flowing despite the heavy demand. If you want a refined, quiet dinner, look elsewhere; if you want the best fish tacos in the Central Maui area, this is the destination.

The fish tacos are a freaking party in your mouth. Every bite was so flavorful and mouthwatering. They're made out of ono and mahi mahi. They were covered with the best coconut coleslaw topped with mango ♡ when I asked a question. The server was beyond polite and very confident in her answer. She made me feel right at home ♡

We were here for lunch on Dec 24th. Our first order was the mochiko chicken lunch plate., our daughter loved it. So we decided to eat and ordered macadamia crusted lunch plate and a side order of fries. Mochiko chicken- well made, good quantity of meat, crispy. We subbed teriyaki sauce with their Sriracha house sauce. C9mes with pasta salad not the potatoes and coconut coleslaw Macadamia crusted Mahi- the filet tasted good- it is deepfried- a sprinkling of nuts. But the portion size was extremely small- our filet was drastically thin. I personally felt the price is not worth it. The plate came filled with coconut coleslaw and comparatively a larger serving of rice. The mango pineapple sauce was good. Fries- well seasoned and we're good. Verdict- some dishes are very small portio so for the price. Yesterday for 25 $ we got a much bigger portion of Mahi at the paia fish market. This filet was 1/2 the size at best.

We visited Coconut’s Fish Cafe at the Azeka Shopping Center on December 4th, 2025 around 6:00 PM, and honestly, we had a really nice time. The place was clean the moment we walked in — tables, floors, everything looked well taken care of. It has a simple, relaxed island vibe that makes you feel comfortable right away. The service was quick, and the staff kept things moving smoothly even with a steady flow of people coming in. Our food came out faster than we expected, which was great. We tried the Coconut Shrimp, the Kalua Pork Plate, and the Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi Plate, along with Aloha Maid juice, guava nectar, and a soft drink. Everything tasted fresh, the portions were good, and the flavors were light and easy to enjoy. Overall, we walked out happy. It’s a clean spot with fast service, decent flavors, and a laid-back feel a solid choice for a casual dinner in Kihei.
