A Neighborhood Staple for Aiea Locals

Tucked away in the heart of Aiea, Young's Kalbee has become a reliable sanctuary for those craving authentic, homestyle Korean flavors. Unlike the polished, high-tech BBQ grills found in Waikiki, this spot leans into a no-frills, counter-service experience that prioritizes the meat itself. The air is consistently thick with the savory, charcoal-scented perfume of sizzling short ribs, a smell that greets you the moment you step through the door.

Signature Plates and Local Flavors

The star of the show is undeniably the Kalbee. Marinated in a secret, sweet-savory blend that balances soy sauce with a distinct fruity undertone, the beef is charred to perfection—providing that essential crispy edge while remaining tender near the bone. Most patrons opt for the combination plates, which allow you to pair the signature ribs with crispy mandu or a helping of their spicy, fermented kimchi that packs a sharp, sinus-clearing punch. The sides here are modest but essential, often serving as a refreshing palate cleanser against the richness of the main proteins.

The Aiea Dining Dynamic

If you visit during the lunch rush, be prepared for a bit of a dance. The dining area is modest and fills up quickly with local office workers and nearby residents. It is a loud, bustling environment where the sound of the metal spatula hitting the grill creates a steady rhythm. Parking in the small lot can get tight, so it is often wise to time your arrival just before or after the peak congestion. This is not a place for a quiet, long-form date; it is a spot for serious eaters who want high-quality BBQ without the fluff. You come here for the consistency, the generous portions, and that unmistakable smoky flavor that defines a proper Hawaiian-Korean plate lunch.

I wish I took photos. My coworker picked up food from this location last week...prices are a bit steep, but for the amount of food, I'm able to split into two meals. I ordered and ate the chicken katsu and fried man doo plate for lunch. It was about $25.00. If you remember the chicken katsu plate from the old Kim chees across McKinley HS, then you will love their version. It's the closest in taste that I could fine. You add the classic sesame seed spicy shoyu sauce...its amazing. Sad you only get 4 pieces of man doo, but the number of chicken katsu made it worth it. The vegetables were the classic pickled seaweed, bean spouts, and cabbage, the Kim chee was nothing special (not flavorful). Since I didn't pick it up, I cannot comment on service or atmosphere. However, if I'm ever in the area, I'll definitely stop by.

I've heard good things about this place for a while but the price has kept me away until one day I was like screw it let's try. It's takeout only by the looks of it but food came out relatively quick despite my place in line and lemme tell you portions on my combo plate was heaping. From the meat jun being perfectly seasoned and caked, the Teri beef being tender seasoned yet big, the sauce being a nice kick rather than shoyu like other places this place was a welcome hit. I'd happily try the rest of my haunts on their menu and while the price is steep the portions and flavor makes the dent in my lunch budget satisfying. Definitely a return spot for me and I assume you too!

Still great food! Haven’t been here for almost ten years but I was craving some meat Jun and I knew where to go. Still one of the best meat juns on the island!
