A Masterclass in Aiea Korean BBQ
Tucked away in the heart of Aiea, Yakiniku Jang Su offers a no-frills, high-heat dining experience that prioritizes the quality of the beef above all else. This is the place for those who appreciate the ritual of the grill—the sharp hiss of marbled short ribs hitting the metal grate and the sweet, charred aroma of caramelized bulgogi smoke filling the room.
The Charcoal Craft
The menu leans heavily into the tradition of authentic Korean yakiniku. Signature cuts like the thick-sliced galbi are trimmed with precision, offering a satisfying chew that pairs perfectly with their house-made spicy dipping sauce. Unlike trendier, fusion-heavy spots across Oahu, Jang Su sticks to the essentials: heavy-duty grills, robust banchan that arrives at your table within seconds, and a steady flow of ice-cold barley tea. The kimchi here has a sharp, fermented tang that cuts through the richness of the fattier beef cuts, a balanced pairing that locals have come to expect.
What to Expect
The atmosphere is bustling and casual, characterized by the low hum of conversation and the rhythmic clatter of tongs. It is an ideal spot for groups who enjoy hands-on dining; expect the space to get quite loud during dinner service as the charcoal grills keep the dining room warm and lively. Pro tip: keep an eye on your parking situation, as the shared stalls in this corner of the Aiea commercial district can fill up quickly during peak hours. If you are looking for a place that values flavor over formality, this is your home base for a hearty, meat-centric feast.

We came here with my mom and my young daughter (almost a toddler). Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. We were given a high chair that was visibly dirty and appeared to have been placed on display without being cleaned first. The waitress also lacked professionalism—she touched my baby after my baby simply said hello, which made me uncomfortable. Before we had even finished eating, she brought us the check, making us feel rushed. After we paid and said thank you, she immediately started clearing our table, even though there were only a few customers in the restaurant. What made this more upsetting was that a Korean table near us, who had been seated before us and were quite loud, did not seem to be treated the same way. While I don’t want to jump to conclusions, the difference in treatment made us feel unwelcome. Overall, this experience left a bad impression.

I came here with my family, and the service was absolutely unacceptable. We sat down, looked at the menu, and waited patiently, but the staff completely ignored us. Instead, they took orders from customers who came in after us—simply because they were Korean and speaking Korean. That is discrimination, plain and simple. My family and I may not be Korean, but that does not mean we should be treated like we are invisible. We left because no one should have to sit in a restaurant and feel ignored or unwelcome based on their background. The food may be good, but service like this ruins everything. If management cares about their customers, they need to make sure all guests are treated with respect and fairness.

I love the food here so much. In all honesty, if I could pick somewhere to eat for the rest of my life, it would be here. My favorites are the Kim Chi jiggae (kimchi stew), and the kim chi Jun (kimchi pancaje). I always get the same things when I come, because why change greatness?
